So Few

there are many that write
...but few that are writers
there are many that paint
...but few that are painters
there are many that play music
...but few that are musicians
there are many that dance
...but few that are dancers
there are many that draw structures
...but few that are architects

["Who am I ....]

there are many that study
...but few that are scholars
there are many that give thought
...but few that are thinkers
there are many that pray
...but few that are religious
there are many that philosophize
...but few that are philosophers
there are many that have searched
...but few that are seekers

[to sit and wonder....]

there are many that use drugs
...but few that are addicted
there are many that drink alcohol
...but few that are drunkards
there are many that make love
...but few that are lovers
there are many that make jokes
...but few that are comedians
there are many that smile
...but few that are happy

[while the wheels of fate...

there are many that speak peace
...but few that are peaceful
there are many that speak politics
...but few that are politicians
there are many that are priests
...but few that know the soul
there are many that preach
...but few that understand
there are many that hear
...but few that truly listen

[slowly grind my life away.."]

labels and semantics
can trip us at times
can't be a writer til
you've put in the time
can't be a hiker
til you have walked
a lifetime of unknown paths

Been spinnin'
some old vinyl records...

Sometimes I liked The Clash,
or other Brit punk growing up in
those early years after the draft.
The particulars varied.

Joe Strummer asked
Skinheads if their music
meant total war on the grove,
when he sang "Corner Soul."

I remember those tunes.
And cracklin' vinyl...
