the midnight rider

it's 1:21 am, tried to find some dreams
but there was nothing but magnified tinnitus
what a shame, I had such a foolproof plan
go to bed early, get some extra rest
and the left, right, back trio ain't working
the calisthenics of the midnight rider

the wrestling match with My Pillow
or at least a facsimile of that, but less famous
and then the audible grunt when you know you're getting up
perhaps a little whiskey river will help
perhaps a little Maui Wowie, and some snacks
the arsenal is full of ammunition
so get ready, This IS War !
and sleep comes to the dreamer-warrior with nothing to lose

but sleep......
and who knows
maybe a poem will rise to the top
like oil paint on water
and maybe those colors
will raft into the mind as bold as love
with the lingering scent of purple haze
and maybe delayed gratification ain't a bad thing

Been there. MAN I wish I could capture the feeling like you did. Sleep is, well, lacking ... I don't ever 'want' to sleep, except to pay dues to exhausted cells. But then that dreamworld, yeah ... if I can remember it. Reluctantly I retire each night, to wake to the same sun, and where did I put my dream notes?

too bad All sleep isn't restorative
some nights it more like a cat nap
and I awake ( No )....Get up
because the sun is streaming through the blinds
