Coffee

The orange coffee cup suits me today
No fancy chemical creamer for this girl

The cold foam cold brew with honey
Is like the Guinness to the beer lover

Time out from this world
As I knew it
Even yesterday

Who I was has fallen from me
Like a snake I have shed seven skins
My colors were hidden beneath a burl
Skittering along each bone like rubber
Little pieces of desert sand surround me
It has occurred to me that the things
I thought I wanted have certainly changed

All the thinking has me slightly deranged
I have saged and prayers have gone up for the future
Generation’s
I love us

when you advance in age
you inevitably look back to notice
what you have done, how you have morphed
from your young self into this more experienced soul
and hopefully those experiences have given you enough insight
to provide a little contentment instead of unproductive regrets and hopefully
the future seems manageable and if you're lucky even something to look forward to

Love the metaphor of the snake shedding its skin for the changes from aging. Excellent transition of morning coffee to reflections on a lifetime. Excellent poem on so much more than coffee.
