armed with only a pen and a brush
I slayed all the dragons....musical notes were shields
colors were daggers in the heart of darkness

acoustic strings resonated the peace
in a cherub's harp, the music
of recovery, the art of healing lies in the distractions

when a man can turn off the devil with a stroke
of Cerulean Blue, when a man injects ink
into cranial creatures spitting fire on his neck

when he can silence the bad breath with just the right words
when he understands a decaying note, and the chromatic scales
aren't reptilian and all the legendary lizards get in line

like harmless pets looking' for their next meal, and you, withhold
the nourishment for the beast in your mind til Komoda shrinks
into a harmless little green gecko left only to do the work of selling insurance

wonderful. I hear Spoken Word waiting to happen.

The music was my 2nd choice. I was going for something triumphant on solo acoustic guitar, but low-key & not too busy. I auditioned quite a few selections, winnowing them down to about a half dozen. My top choice (John McLaughlin's "Peace Piece") didn't run quite long enough to accommodate the pauses I wanted to embed. "Prelude #2" felt a bit more somber than I'd wanted, but was about the right length, & expediency won the toss.

I'd already burned a partial version using the McLaughlin piece before deciding to go with "Prelude". It's incomplete, and I re-read some of the lines for the new version - but I think the music is a little closer to what I'd originally aimed for:

This is also delightful, a little more cynical. Excellent. (I listened to this one afterwards - and I like giving the credit to Kenny Burrell)

I was happy to do it, & hope I haven't given the impression that the challenges made the task onerous. I just enjoy talking about the mechanical AND artistic processes that go into in making it happen. (I come with a "can cause drowsiness" warning label....)

Yes, each piece of music contributes something - though not always what I'm looking for. Larry Coryell's "Solo on Wednesday" made the final cut, but its complex time signatures distracted from the rhythm of the words. Likewise, the guitar intro of Burrell's "Lotus Land" worked really well, but the quality of my recording of it is poor.

You can really tell when you've found "The One" piece of music that was meant to accompany the slideshow, or the spoken word, or whatever - it becomes more than accompaniment. The two entities flow together into something greater than either. The presentation comes alive somehow, it glows, it hums, & without knowing Why, you just know it's right. My left-brain wishes there were a less exhaustive process than auditioning one song at a time, but grudgingly cedes control of the search to its counterpart! (It has written some clumsy software to assist right-brain's hunt, but balks at the amount of work it would take to perfect it...)

beautiful explanation roy.....and I am wiser and more fulfilled from it....
