there is grace in empathy
when one can pull apart the vines
of our bias to get a closer look
at an unknown reality just as valid
and honorable as the back of our hands

the ego can do monstrous things
believing all the while in its virtue
and so here I sit this evening
writing my atheist sermon as if
I really know anything at all

it's the writing I have a jones for
an arcane belief that if I just apply myself....
I believe that is what the teachers used to say
" if he only applied himself"
he could be a better student (person )

I fine time tonight to be still
it's always there for the taking
as my old professors turn in their coffins
my restless legs bound to my imaginary desk
tied tightly in colorless faux ribbons

I traverse the black slow lane
dimly lit with my good intentions
I scribble impassioned nonsense
that crawls around the room
like the tails of lethargic comets

Before we know any better, we tend to believe what we're told we are, and try to fit that mold. It can take years, a lifetime, to unlearn that and become what we actually are.

The slowest comets are those that orbit furthest from the sun - the fastest are the most likely to become immolated within it.........
