at times, the hawk bites

at times. the hawk bites
the wind off the lake like the old one-two
right cross and a jab
the rowhomes block the bluster
until you come to the end house
then wham, nothing subtle about
The Montebello Wind
I'm not talking about some stupid oboe
A force of nature !, ...the geese
just plop down and float by with no propulsion
why fight Gaia, let her have her way
allow the dominance, it won't kill you
whoa....a plastic bag from hell sails by
my head on its way to the stars
a mountain biker drops down into his last gear
a woman runs from car to house
clearly concerned about lift-off
here in Baltimore we call it "The Hawk "
I've heard it my whole life, hundreds and hundreds
of times as in, a man walks into the convenience store
says to the checker, "Man the hawk's out there today !"
I knew what he meant, no translation necessary
it's the language of the street
righteous
and to the point
the hawk will have his say
and at times, the hawk bites
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading
