the doctor told me there is no free ride
which is bawdy talk since she is not the one taking a piss
in a hospital restroom
when without warning the bowels let loose
and all the poetry goes running down your legs into your tawdry boots

you clean up as best you can
but you still have to make it home like that
with what you couldn't reach cooling on your skin
all the while beginning to understand
what the doctor meant about freedom & the ride

it's my turn and if I had to identify anything
I would say sudden sabotage has taken the stage
with a cake ticket in one hand & a ghost without bone or flesh in the other

still, we must eat
not so much for nourishment
but because of the debts we owe

the body laughs
haha! control, you thought!
surrender to non-ego

been down that road a few times
or a road that feels similar, you lose
your modesty after a week or two
in the hospital amid the checking
checking checking your vital signs
and your gown up around your neck
bladder surgery one week....
quintuple bypass two weeks and
a myriad of shorter visits here and there
mini stroke.....deafness....oh Man

but the good news is I'm still here
happy for a few more chances
Resist the disease.....believe better days are ahead
dignity becomes a battle at times
but nurses have seen it all before
and some can be so god damn nice...so kind

I've never been hospitalized but I've been a caregiver of loved ones many times...I can't avoid feel a punch in my stomach each time I enter a sanatorium...but the last doesn't really matter when what it does matter is another thing. Big hug to you and your family, dear Mingo
