when I dry up like a leaf
fallen to the earth
devoid of color
and my throat refuses
to vibrate, and my eyes
have shrunken like old fruit
on the vine

but until that time
I'll swallow the medicine
that nurtures my soul
and rejoice as it slips down
to the bottom of my toes

into the belly of my oceans
dreams dreams dreams
tablespoons of nourishment
slippery as hope and bold as love

did you know that there may be
fish down so deep
that no man has ever seen them
