The youngest son of a youngest son, by the time he came along she understood men all too well. Crazy mike would give her cryptic warnings, “one day you will regret it” referring to her stepping between her baby boy and his father when he was trying to discipline his son. He (the mama’s boy) can still remember the feel of her throat between his hands in November 1963. Once she lost the power to impose her will on him by beatings, that one day when he refused to cry when she beat on him. When she saw the defiance in his eyes. Oh well “Mama tried to raise me right”, I am the only hell my mama ever raised. She would not let her husband inflict any corporal punishment on her sons, not after what happened to homeboy. But crazy daddy was a genius at psychological punishments. But of course her biggest regret was her daughter. And her daughter’s worst nightmare was Rose, for a long time it was crazy mike, but eventually the nightmare turned into rose. On her deathbed he promised her that he would look out for her daughter.. She gave him a funny look. Kind of like she was saying “Good Luck.” Now that I think about it I wish he had told her that “I would look out for her grandson.” But I suppose it is the same thing, if he looks out for his sister, I am looking out for her son too.

So by the time her third son came along she understood little boys all too well, and she thought she understood men too. But her fifth child, her only daughter was the one to break her heart, break it harder then any son ever could.
