Caught In The Flames
Funny how our friendship stayed the same.
Last time I saw you you were caught in the flames.
Would of stopped to put you out
but I was searching for my own water spout.
Traveled down many a dark road
each step adding to my heavy load.
Looking for salvation and the promised land
learning the hard way to be a man.
We both dealt with the demons within.
We both learned about the happiness in sin.
Walking alone as the world had its way,
looking for those damn dragons to slay.
Lost it all as we staggered along
learning to sing those lonely blues songs.
I don’t know where the years all went
counting the loss of the treasures we spent.
I wound up on the dark side of lost
finally unable to count the cost.
Lingering in my endless misery
picking up what was left of me.
I guess you were doing the same
finding a way to survive the game.
You called the other night
felt like the world had finally turned right,
Buddy Guy playing in the background.
The blues picking you up not bringing you down.
You said “ Man, it’s a beautiful night.”
I replied “Yes, we finally got it right.”
After you hung up I put on a blues tune.
Remembering our younger days under a harvest moon.
Losing the lust for life in our eye.
I sat listening to the music trying not to cry.
Goddamn we’re lucky we survived.
Funny how our friendship stayed the same.
Last time I saw you you were caught in the flames.
Would of stopped to put you out
