i wrote this when i was 17 years old. several years ago, my son transcribed it for me from the scribbles on a piece of paper ... your piece reminded me of it.

i am not. in the beginning there was no beginning. at the end there will be no end. but all is motion. all is change. samsara is nirvana. life is death. death is life. i close my eyes, my body drifts through nothing, everything.something, maya, and heaven. then, nobody-God becomes. but this is not a beginning for god plays hide and seek in and out of me. (me is not) and God is/was/shall be. i realize i am not. God stops hiding. and now i'm on a swingset. no up without down. no swing without swung. no push without pull. i am the swing and i am not. there would be no swinging motion without the relationship of swing to the earth, earth to sky,sky to i, and i am not.there would be nothing without something else so there is everything. i am not. it is all change. all flowing motion. all flowing rivers. there could not be a river without the differences between the river and the sky, the sky and the earth ,the earth and i, and i am not. it is all change. but there would be no change without stillness, without not-change, without stalemates and calmness. there is no awake without asleep (yang without ying) there is no life without death and no i without a comparison to everything else. but what makes me up is the everything else. i am not on the outside looking in or the inside looking out at this world but the world is me. and i the world. therefore there is no comparison without comparison between any two things, neither thing can exist. therefore i am not. the world is not. I am, the world is. all is change.

"Since words are always an abstract, approximate map of reality, the verbal interpretations of a scientific experiment or of a mystical insight are necessarily inaccurate and incomplete. . . .the realization that all models and theories are approximate is basic to modern scientific research. Thus the aphorism of Einstein, 'As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.'"

Cecil, I googled Koan followed links to one that struck me
Bodhidharma), it divided into two schools, the Southern school, which believed in sudden enlightenment, and the Northern school, which believed in gradual enlightenment. By the 8th century only the Northern school survived.
Too bad for me, like my father before me I took a rebel stand.
“The best things cannot be told, the second best are misunderstood. After that comes civilized conversation; after that, mass indoctrination; after that, intercultural exchange. And so, proceeding, we come to the problem of communication: the opening, that is to say, of one's own truth and depth to the depth and truth of another in such a way as to establish an authentic community of existence.”

And Nirvana
Found my hero had feet of clay
Still a hero to me
But now I got to find my own way.

A home for me between a synagogue and a Quaker Meeting house. Cecil's Sunday Stream. A little piece of silence in Doreen's garden. An authentic community, be it silicon or carbon.

Its a long time since I read ZATAOMM but as I remember it the gist was/is - ditch the ego. We are all part of a whole which is so much more than each of us but we are all important nonetheless. If that makes sense. Relax and be good to yourself is also what I got from it!
thanks mate
