"Seeking Wisdom"

Post by sooZen » January 28th, 2006, 10:50 am

Here is a poem that mtmynd wrote and I found on the Philosophy Now Forum that he occasionally pontificates on. I thought it was pretty wise for the old fool:

Seeking Wisdom

What drives the Philosopher
the lover of Wisdom?
Wisdom is called a noun
but yet it's so much more.

Described as an ability
to discern right from wrong...
Common sense? Good judgement?
Those are but Wisdom's qualities.

Can Wisdom be held in my hands
Can it be smelled, tasted, heard..?
Or does it lie beyond the senses
teasing the imagination..?

How many seekers have
been fooled by another
calling itself Wisdom
only to spread confusion?

What is this Wisdom and
how do I recognize it?
Will it introduce itself to me?
Invite me to dinner?

Wisdom! Where art thou?
So many have called you by name
but how do they know it is you?
Where can you be found?

Wisdom! You shady bastard!
Why must you be hunted down?
If you are so precious why don't
you give freely of yourself?

Wisdom! to be loved...
but I cannot take you to bed,
I cannot fondle your preciousnes,
I cannot return what you have given.

Should we not walk on the same earth?
Should we not be equals?
But no! You must be sought out
as if you were a secret.

But a secret must be always kept
or else it loses its secretiveness...
so are you a fugitive from knowledge
one step ahead of logic and reason?

Wisdom! You devil dog!
Mankind has sought you out
ever since we could think
and yet you could be no-thing.

Wisdom! Are you of the spirit
and that is why nobody can describe
this word that carries such lure
that you seduce all seekers?

Seduced into a life of thought,
thinkers and philosophers
have put you on a pedestal
for you must be the One -

The One that is the pinnacle
to all that man strives to attain
and yet you are no-thing
for you cannot be the end

for the end of Wisdom is
not Wisdom at all but
the beginning of yet
another journey in search

of Wisdom that must lie
within reach of those that
keep searching for you
and your no-thingness

Wisdom! You are not
the final destination but
the journey itself and what
has been gained upon its path.

For the journey is also no-thing
but the experience of seeking
adding to the vitality of being,
to become Wisdom's reflection.

Wisdom is a cornflake,
drifting across milk.
Wisdom is an old Ford carburetor,
bolted to an engine of learn.
Wisdom is electron around nucleus,
or planet around star,
or mystery around truth.
Wisdom is a stone tablet,
or a tablet of stone groove.
Wisdom is a new paradigm,
or the old paradigm's rubble.
Wisdom is the omelette,
or the broken egg.
Wisdom is today, over its time,
or mind over its matter,
or matter over its mind,
So never mind,
pay no mind, since...
Wisdom journeys
toward wisdom.

Enjoyed the read, Cecil. (and you have a very good publicist, I might add)....

Yes it has been said many times many ways

Wisdom is a woman

And she does not hide

She stands at the gates of the city and cries out

Only most men are too got dam stupid to see her or hear her.

As the police commissioner of Baltimore said so elegantly

"Women are just god's little puffs of fluff.

Cecil, you are a simple man. I always liked the line from a Quaker children's song. "It is a gift to be simple."

Cut and Paste from KJV

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

Wisdom hath builded her house, she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

Who so is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

##I LOVE this! I want to quote on it even in places. Please bear with me. My remarks indicated by ##.

Seeking Wisdom

What drives the Philosopher
the lover of Wisdom?
Wisdom is called a noun
but yet it's so much more.

##Spirit and Spirit only. There is a vast difference between knowledge - knowing things perceivable only through the senses and transitiory mind - and Wisdom - that which can only be grasped by Wisdom itself, or the untransitory Spirit.

Described as an ability
to discern right from wrong...
Common sense? Good judgement?
Those are but Wisdom's qualities.

##Knowledge discerns right from wrong. Touch a hot stove and you gain knowledge that it will hurt. This is not Wisdom. Wisdom's qualtities are far superior than mere knowledge.

Can Wisdom be held in my hands
Can it be smelled, tasted, heard..?
Or does it lie beyond the senses
teasing the imagination..?

##You have just touched the magic key - beyond the senses. Still all sensory stimulii and the resultant restless mind. 'Be still and know that I am God.' (Wisdom)

How many seekers have
been fooled by another
calling itself Wisdom
only to spread confusion?

##Far too many!

What is this Wisdom and
how do I recognize it?
Will it introduce itself to me?
Invite me to dinner?

##When the appetite grows strong enough it certainly does invite you to dinner, introduces Itself to you and even imparts Itself to you. But only when the appetite is very, very strong and the hunger hurts, not before. Having the munchies is just not enough. They grab whatever is at hand. True hunger requires true nourishment and seeks and finds it.

Wisdom! Where art thou?
So many have called you by name
but how do they know it is you?
Where can you be found?

##Again, just behind the veil of the delusory sense perceptions and flighty mind. These MUST be stilled before the rippleless lake of Wisdom will manifest, for it bears no ripples.

Wisdom! You shady bastard!
Why must you be hunted down?
If you are so precious why don't
you give freely of yourself?

##There would be no creation then. Lila would cease to exist. But it does give freely of Itself when sought with intensity. Then all duality of creation desolves in the Cosmic Empyrean. But Wisdom is not the end, only the means to the end...

Wisdom! to be loved...
but I cannot take you to bed,
I cannot fondle your preciousnes,
I cannot return what you have given.

##You need not fondle Wisdom, for She fondles you and needs not your fondling.

Should we not walk on the same earth?
Should we not be equals?
But no! You must be sought out
as if you were a secret.

##It does walk the same earth. It is equal. But it is a secret you need not seek out, only remember. 'And all these things shall be brought to your remembrance.' - the Christ. And you can only remember when you first learn to forget the inane relativity of this sphere's 'knowledge', which is of no use beyond this transitory sphere. Adjust your focus.

But a secret must be always kept
or else it loses its secretiveness...
so are you a fugitive from knowledge
one step ahead of logic and reason?

##Some secrets are specifically designed to be known. A fugitive from knowledge? They are not even distantly related. Logic and reason are first cousins to knowledge only.

Wisdom! You devil dog!
Mankind has sought you out
ever since we could think
and yet you could be no-thing.

##Or Everything. 'These things have been hidden from the 'wise' and prudent and revealed unto babes.' - the Christ. (I am not a bible fanatic or Christian in the sense one might gather from certain quotes I use from therein. The Bible is very esoteric though.) A great Hindu master once said "The rains of God's mercy (Wisdom/Love) cannot gather on mountaintops of pride, but flow easily into valleys of humbleness."

Wisdom! Are you of the spirit
and that is why nobody can describe
this word that carries such lure
that you seduce all seekers?

##Exactly! And as the cup cannot hold the ocean, neither can aught but Wisdom comprehend Wisdom. Again, go behind the veil and enlarge your cup.

Seduced into a life of thought,
thinkers and philosophers
have put you on a pedestal
for you must be the One -

##Thought is for sluggard minds such as we have here on this earthly sphere. Wisdom is all things already and has no need of thought to convey Itself to Itself. Is already Is. Thought cannot discern Wisdom.

The One that is the pinnacle
to all that man strives to attain
and yet you are no-thing
for you cannot be the end

##You are correct. Wisdom is not the end, but the means to the end - Bliss - Ever New Joy unending. Hard, if not impossible, to comprehend in a world composed of dualities; pleasure and pain; light and dark; up and down; in and out; etc., but nonetheless true and known by all the true realized prophets down through the aeons.....and attainable by us too.

for the end of Wisdom is
not Wisdom at all but
the beginning of yet
another journey in search

##Of our true inherent nature - again, Bliss Eternal. Omniscience. Omnipresence. Omnipotence. Precepts too large for the cup to hold but fortunately not depending on the cups ability to hold them or not.

of Wisdom that must lie
within reach of those that
keep searching for you
and your no-thingness

##Definitely in reach when the hunger becomes unbearable. No-thingness is actually pretty accurate because it is far beyond 'things'.

Wisdom! You are not
the final destination but
the journey itself and what
has been gained upon its path.

##Comments above apply here and what is gained by Wisdom is Love, and what is gained by Love is Bliss.

For the journey is also no-thing
but the experience of seeking
adding to the vitality of being,
to become Wisdom's reflection.

## Wisdom's only reflection is Itself. We can only reflect 'thoughts' of Wisdom, 'conceptions' of Wisdom, but these are not true reflections of Wisdom, which can only reflect Itself. Can a man reflect the ocean?

my reflections,

lenny

Sophia and I make a good couple. We loook good together in pictures; we're pretty photogenic. We make good dinner conversation--sometimes she's quiet, but it never hurts the discussion.

Since we make such a good couple, I was surprised when Sophia laughed at my marriage proposal. Turns out, she didn't know I thought we were courting.

In fact, Sophia was taken a bit aback by my hubris at thinking we were together. However, she was gracious as usual.

We still flirt--well, I think we do. Whatever she's after, she hasn't left me all together.

Funny thing is, I can't bring myself to be upset with her. Sophia's just that kind of person.
