Mother's Day

Post by lynn » May 24th, 2006, 10:58 am

Hi, I'm new here & just met Doreen last night, so I hope my poem isn't critiqued too harshly!
I wrote this on Mother's Day. I was cleaning house & came upon a picture of my mom ( in which something had gotten spilled on), & my day took a turn for the worse. Needless to say, I still joined in my in-laws festivities.....

Mother's Day No-Show

Sorry I couldn't make it today
And neither could my guest of honor
I guess part of my heart was missing
Like a dark cloud that blocks out the sun
There's been a total eclipse of my heart.

Today is a day for celebration, not mourning,
This I know, but yet I feel too sad to attend.
The day I lost my mom, is the day my family fell apart.
The glue that bonded us, no longer existed,
Nor has it since.

You are a warm, generous, giving, loving, selfless woman
Truly blessed, the reason everyone came,
And will continue to each year.

I sure miss it in my family.
It's been 12 years or so
Since we've had anything of the kind.

I hope they realize how lucky they are
I know I do.
You are a wonderful mother, Nana, & mother-in-law
To so many of us
I'm truly grateful for you
I got lucky.

Hopefully, that cloud will disperse soon
Cuz' a few guys want to celebrate me today
And I need to find my "happy face"
Or it won't be much of a celebration.

Welcome to the Studio, Lynn!

Good to see you here!

Thanks for sharing this Mother's Day piece. It is clearly heartfelt, honest, and touching. I like that.

I was reading in a book this morning about how important it is to live in the moment, instead of in the past or future. The author said he was lugging around boxes of photographs and memorabilia for years from this residence to that and then realized that he was only carrying his past with him and it was a lot of weight to carry. So, he did a very dramatic thing and threw away all the photos and other memoriabilia he had saved. That's a little drastic, but he was making a point for himself.

After he did it, he said he felt remorse at first! "I'll never see that person's face again," he thought, because the photo was gone. But then he realized that the memory of the persons he knew and loved in his life would always be embedded in his mind.

This is an extreme illustration but having lost my father, I know I don't need a photo of him to remember his face, his voice, his humor, his presence. He's with me every day. And though I'm sorry something was spilled on the photo of your mom and it hit you so hard because the photo was special to you and though I have photos of my dad which are special to me, if they all got destroyed somehow, he'd still be with me as I know your mom is still with you.

Looking forward to reading more of your poems and posts here, Lynn!

And next time I see you on Scrabble, watch out! I'm gonna rack up the big points and redeem myself from embarrassment. ;)

Welcome Lynn, your poem is a lovely tribute to your Mom.

I'm glad you found your"happy face". I like to keep a spare in my bedside table, with a pot of super glue...never know when I'm gonna need it. And look, there it is now... :D
I used to walk with my head in the clouds but I kept getting struck by lightning!
Now my head twitches and I drool alot. Anonymouse
