If I confess, will you forgive?

If I confess, will you forgive? Too long
perhaps I’ve entertained some character
ersatz for you. I thought her love; and wrong
as I may well have been, I sculpted her
to honor you with brilliant grace as sure
and great as you possess my highest dreams
for paradise—bold, intimate and pure
and sweet in safety harbored. Times it seems
I’m too awake for silliness; and seems
you’ve claimed reality and truths that I
withheld— I’ll once confess my sorry themes
of love: I’ve loved you, yes; if lately I
have love confessed, I’ve loved. Will you forgive
me, please, before I wake again to live?
