I understood too young

I understood too young the truth of love
in all its endless promise. Would I’d not
committed my fidelity to you,
but rather lusted well-intentioned just
as you had lusted over love for me
and nothing more—but no, I promised love
and not orgasmic joy of new romance,
but solidarity for life’s perchance
occurrences. And now perchance to prove
my faithfulness despite what comes to be,
I learn you never loved me. Must
I honor my commitment? What is true
of love if love claims honor only wrought
by reciprocity?—not endless love.
in all its endless promise. Would I’d not
committed my fidelity to you,
but rather lusted well-intentioned just
as you had lusted over love for me
and nothing more—but no, I promised love
and not orgasmic joy of new romance,
but solidarity for life’s perchance
occurrences. And now perchance to prove
my faithfulness despite what comes to be,
I learn you never loved me. Must
I honor my commitment? What is true
