In Sant’Agnello: gentle cherubim
of autumn skies baroque prevent the close
of Saturn’s run beyond these rented rooms
till windows opened exorcise the wings
of evening messengers through curtains swung
as church bells rung, predicting ten o’clock

as ancient lullabies— the evening sings
but darkest preludes fore the sun exhumes
its steadfast Sant’Agnello; if it crows
a typecast love aright, pity not the hymn—
