Two walnut doves set face on me

like prey aware of fragile life;

their still embrace betrayed the strife

those doves expected out of me,

but I walked by and they were spared—

they cooed their thanks and I compared:

they looked at me the way you do—
their eyes weren’t set for me, but through.

I could have moved, I could have loved.
I could have moved and loved, I could.

You fancy you so coy, so smart—

I get for me how deep you pine.

You hope you’re booked to come be mine;

you gambled truth and dared my heart.

You look the fool, but look about

with eyes you know I’d die without:

you place your faith in you;
and I do too,

I pray.
