on histrionic jubilations you
assign to rapture joy— or more sincere,
more heartfelt grunts of simple pains you claim
from my inflictions? Ought we’ve not enjoyed
true disciplines of love? So tell the truth:
would you prefer gentility assured
or honest love impassioned, sweet and sword,
to worthy trust my compliment and couth
esteem for you as much my strength employed
against your weakness? Love is but my aim—
love reality esteems. Don’t fear
my lovesome fierce felicities, but through
love’s rage engage compassions sore.
