Not even the Word

You were guilty
before the trial
was concluded.
Before the blame
was laid
in accusations.
Before the crime.
You were guilty before
the guilty mind
adhered.
You were guilty before
coming of age.
You were guilty
before coming
into this world.
You were the guilty strain
of light
in your fathers' eyes.
You were the guilty scent
of sex
in your mother's breath.
You were the guilt
of the Law.
Before you
there was the guilt.
And before that --
nothing.
Not even the Word
"guilt."
before the trial
was concluded.
Before the blame
was laid
in accusations.
Before the crime.
You were guilty before
the guilty mind
adhered.
You were guilty before
coming of age.
You were guilty
before coming
into this world.
You were the guilty strain
of light
in your fathers' eyes.
You were the guilty scent
of sex
in your mother's breath.
You were the guilt
of the Law.
Before you
there was the guilt.
And before that --
nothing.
Not even the Word
"guilt."
