Beat It

Michael Jackson was a child star. That could be classified as a form of abuse. Abuse is perpetuated from generation to generation we are told by quack psychologists. So now Jacko goes on trial because he likes little children. We don't know if he puts his hands where they don't belong or not. Only he knows that.

We first saw MJ as the cherubic little black boy with his line of brothers behind him. He had a great mahaghony color and his nose was spread all over his face as is native to his race. And yeah, now he looks like the Phantom of the Opera because of an excess of cosmetic surgery, but that doesn't make him a pedophile.

We Americans revel in the excesses of our celebrities. Michael Jackson is nothing if not a social icon. American culture loves its wierdos. They love to hear that Howard Hughes, probably the richest man in the world, died as a hermit recluse drug addict with inch long fingernails. If Liberace wants to be flamingly gay and cover his piano with rhindstones and ride onto the stage in a pink convertible, we applaud it. If Elvis takes more drugs than Satan and puts shoe polish on his hair and wears jump-suits with forty pound belt buckles and gives away Cadillacs, we call him The King. You can't check out at the grocery store without being flashed with magazine covers documenting the excesses of our celebs. This one is too fat, or these two are breaking up, or that one has entered rehab for drugs, gambling or sex addiction.

We love it when our icons crack up and display the same human foibles that we share. We delight in the spectacle of a public life that is cursed by riches or beauty or fame.

I could imagine fucking Paris Hilton, but I couldn't imagine BEING Paris Hilton. She is a total creature of the media. She reminds me subtly of John-John Kennedy or Prince William. They all have the same talent--being born into fortune and beauty.

If you thought that the OJ trial was fun, just wait for the Michael Jackson trial. It will be a star-studded show, a six month mini-series. They ought to sell tickets. Liz Taylor will be there and Maury Povich and a slew of celebs that will surely give a new dimension to the term 'character witnesses.' When the defense trots out Deepak Chopra, what is the prosecution going to do but hire Dr. Phil?

So, Michael Jackson is pre-occupied with young boys. The orthodoxy is that since he missed his childhood, he is trying to regain it by developing relationships with juveniles. You've heard all the jokes. "If Michael Jackson touches one more little boy, they will have to give him his own parish"...etc. It's going to be an uphill battle for Jackson.

I think Michael should get Quincy Jones (Where is Johnny Cochran?) as his lawyer. If you want to do a show, you need a producer.

There is a different standard of justice for the famous. It shows how flawed and tawdry our criminal justice system is. There is one standard if the cameras are in the room and quite another if you are just a pedestrian caught up in the process.

OJ plays golf today and DeLorean is clipping his coupons, because they could hire the best defense lawyers. DeLorean spent four million dollars on his. When I was on trial for getting too creative with my chemistry set, there was only one snoozing reporter in the courtroom, one drunken lawyer, and I was railroaded for thirty-five years. But then, I wasn't a celebrity.

We have two justice systems in this country. One is for high profile cases like Martha Stewart's or Michael Jackson's, and there is quite another one for the rest of us. While celebrities and the wealthy have dream teams of attorneys and trials that go on for months, most of us are subject to a system where we are underrepresented and shuffled through as quickly as possible.

The Poet's Eye wouldn't miss the Michael Jackson trial. It will be a kitch show of fab, glam and legal pornography. It will show us yet again what a farce our legal system is. America is the land of opportunity where you can have all the justice you can afford.

Rod and staff...heh. This is the first thing I read this morning because it was in my box...

I couldn't agree and disagree with you more (that's kinda the way I pick sides.) :D

Jacko is a freak, all his own doing and good on him. Too bad we all don't have enough money to customize our exteriors, like getting the car painted or building a great bike. The parts may change but the foundation is still there. Now, I don' t particularly cotton to his 'style' of exterior but I know that boyo has talent up the yinyang. Dances like Gene Kelley, sings like a canary (a hyper canary) and well, he's been damn entertaining and we, my boys and I have been mightily entertained by him for many years. (BTW, Nate still loves Mikey and doesn't see any flaws whatsoever. Of course he wouldn't know the word 'pedophilia' from 'plutonic'.)

I have observed, with these very eyeballs, the way "justice" works for the rich and the poor. It is as uneven as a mountain range. Celebrities have a special onus in this fervor that we call 'famous'. You nailed that sucker on the head.

I have seen Geraldo, who has his own crosses to lug, stand up and say he believes in Jacko, knows Jacko and will defend his innocence to the bitter gate of end. I like Geraldo too, his flaws are out in the open and I don't think he is a big fat liar like many so called journalists whose mugs are on the (I almost said 'tube' but that is passe' ) screen in our abodes.

Now, like you, I don't know if Jacko has ever abused anyone, except himself. This is not my point either. I too will watch it all play out big band style. But my questions for you brother, is if our justice system is so flawed (and it certainly is). How can it change? Who will change it? Where else but in this world called America do we air our dirty undies for all to smell (whew, that was a stinky anology! Hah!)? It is all fine and dandy to criticize and boy, I am glad that you and others like Molly and Jim and Geraldo dig the dirt, spread the word, open closets and expose the soft underbelly of our armored chinks. What is the answer?

o yeah and SAVE Martha Stewart! Hah!

Love the Eye.

Peace,
SooZen

sooz,

thanks for the comments.
I always pay particular attention to what you have to say because I know that your feet are (most times) planted firmly on the ground.

Last week I sent copies of The Poet's Eye to Creators Syndicate, that's the bunch that handles Molly Ivins. And I just wrote a letter to Jim Hightower.
I don't share your enthusiasm for Geraldo, as a journalist I think he is a bit promiscuous. (ok, he's a whore.) But, hey, I've got my red dress too.

Good on you Rod and I hope they (those in publishing power) see the great insight you have to offer.

As for that whore Geraldo, yes he has been know to bend over, but I will always hold a soft spot in my llittle ole' heart for his expose' of the conditions in the instiitutions for the mentally retarded and his rescue of a young man with Cerebral Palsy that was in there because of appearances. Gerry fostered that kid, gave him a home, saved his life. So I have firm ground (hah!) for my love affair with that hussy for the truth...

Now, another question (I am packing for the road again...a weekend with my Posse but I will check back), do you read the Dispatch From Phar Lepht? Hah!

Also, if you want to see some great writing (and some so so spelling) , check out my Dad's (84 years young) blog "Carolina Callings" http://almandbob2.blogspot.com

He has some great tales about growing up in West Texas on a ranch and a post about his Grandfather's discovery of the Marfa Lights, the first man to notice them... He has lots of stories about guns too. Hah! Say howdy to him for me...he would get a kick outta sombody besides "su nina" giving him a response. You can see where I might have gotten some writin' skills.

Later sharpshooter.

Peaceably,
SooZen
