"we may not arrive in a port within the calculated period,
but we would pursue the true course."
(i think this was martin l king's quote, i believe,
it is written on the backside of this frayed note,
a poem handwritten for me by an elderly lady
who i carried during my years as a driver for the
caddo council on the aging in louisiana, 1983-87/
bernice hayes had a son at home who was disturbed;
he would be sitting in the garage;
many of the old folks, especially the old black folks, were nurturing
towards me, and this lil old poem composed by bernice
is now posted here

"Don't get Discourage"
If you have a mountain that
you want to climb and seem like
it takes such an offer long time,
don't give up your climb. All it
takes, just a little at a time.
If you are an artist and doing
your best and seem like things
are not on the line, Don't give
up your line. All it takes, just
a little at a time.
If you have a goal you would like
to reach, and seem like things are
blocking your Path of Prime,
Don't give up, all it takes just a
little at a time.
If you fail in life's compition and don't
think you are ambitious, Such
your Mind with joy and Peace. Start
over again with joy serene
and you will find, all it takes just a
little at a time.
(written by Bernice Hayes
from the 2nd mount zion babtist church
cedar grove, shreveport)
1987)
