The Modern Now
Modernity - (n): the state or quality of being modern.Modern - (adj): of or relating to recent times or the present.
I think we all have a sense of what modern is, but these dictionary definitions are somewhat vague. But I do find it interesting that the definition of modern uses the words recent and present.
Recent - (adj): of, belonging to, or occurring at a time immediately before the present.
Present - (n): a moment or period in time perceptible as intermediate between past and future; now.
The state of Now is a place that all of Nature abides by. There is no past, no future... just the eternal Now and Life blazing thru the cosmos untethered by Mind halting, analyzing, confusing with dualities. Nature is Now. Nature is forever modern. And yet we humans seem to play catch up with Nature... latching on to Nature's coattails, spinning in delirium, as it continues on its path with or without us.
I enjoy the modern. The modern breaks with tradition, the modern continues to evolve, the modern is constant change, influenced by forces greater than we might comprehend. We are not just a part of Nature, but the essence of Nature, just as all living things are.
Our minds make us diverse and unique despite our commonalities. Our egos define who we are within society. It has been said that ego is society - that which dictates our being, our purpose, our paths in Life's journey.
As modern (now) as Life is, we are constantly influenced by Past. Our conditionings of Mind are the baggage we carry from childhood imprints and onward, up thru adulthood, some of it helpful in our growth and other conditionings detrimental to our growth. We need to evaluate our conditionings, review their worth, leaving behind those that no longer are useful - cleaning out our surroundings, making new of our influences thru the choices available to us. Tuning in to the Now, becoming modern, if we don't listen to our instincts to change, to grow, to learn and accept the Now which we all live in, we become lost and in the way... our own way and the way of others.
Modernity is refreshing as a summer rain complete with rainbows stretched across the sky, nourishing Nature, our own nature included. Acceptance of Now is revolutionary... not the Now, but the acceptance of Now. The acceptance of Now changes our being from dull and boring to new and interesting. The world is so diverse with sounds and color, with variety that can stimulate all our senses, and we miss so much by locking ourselves away from Life's majesty.
So much of our hu'man world is stifled by Past and pins its hopes on a future never quite attainable... the present is never good enough. The present never seems good enough because it never remains.
We build machines to transport us - the locomotives, the automobile, aircraft... physical transports... we build machines to transport us mentally - stereos, televisions, computers... we create 'stuff and things' to transport us from our 'mundane-nesses', those things that no longer satisfy our longings, our needs, our loves. We modernize ourselves to escape the shit that brings us down, even the modern grows old if we do not continue living in the present.
Living in the present does not mean to say, "Hey, this present is pretty cool... I think I'll stay here. - if we stay here, that quickly turns to staying there which is Past.
The Now necessitates our being without desire - satisfaction achieved thru stillness of Mind, where all can be seen, where all can be heard, where all senses are tuned in to the same Channel Now. We become transported into the modern, that which has always existed beyond Mind. No past to anchor us from our Liberation, no future to instill doubt or confusion.
___________
bask in the Now
still the restless mind
that's in constant flux
seeking answers to
its own questions.
The answers are never enough
for they bring more questions,
good for exercise
but useless in the Now.
For when we live our lives
in the spaciousness of Now
we have room for our Being
to flourish and attain
its potential
its sacred individuality.
