Sunday Stream (7) ~ Re-Considering Risk

Post by mtmynd » November 14th, 2004, 3:25 pm

Risk

1. The possibility of suffering harm or loss; danger.
2. A factor, thing, element, or course involving uncertain danger; a hazard:
“the usual risks of the desert: rattlesnakes, the heat, and lack of water.”[/size] (Frank Clancy)

Risk is a noun... a negative noun. Who would point out that “...possibility of suffering harm...” without pointing out the positive – 'reward'?

1. Something given or received in recompense for worthy behavior or in retribution for evil acts.
2. Money offered or given for some special service, such as the return of a lost article or the capture of a criminal.
3. A satisfying return or result; profit.
4. Psychology. The return for performance of a desired behavior; positive reinforcement.

[However, ‘reward’ is given two sides of the understanding – the ‘for/or factor’... for positive behavior or for something given or demanded in repayment, especially punishment.

Punishment? That’s a pretty tough word. Punishment... demanded in repayment, especially punishment. One hell of a reward, the just reward.

I’ll take a risk here with the possibility of suffering harm or loss. But I may be rewarded, even if it is a demand of my repayment for the reward. When we are rewarded the flow must continue, so we reward others for aiding us to be rewarded, thus completing some ideal circle. Makes me dizzy to think about it sometimes... all that spinning and changing almost non-stop.

It’s good to step off the wheel for a nice change. It gives us a chance to “RE”... you know: re-charge, re-connect, re-focus, re-lax, re-fine the re-flex thru re-creation... re-turning to the Self. Re-Selfing. Re-ward. Re-done re-turn... re-volve re-ntlessley.

Risk is a gamble. It is not a safe-zone. We face risk everyday on many levels – taking a shower (we may fall and hit our head!), using the stove (we could burn ourselves!), we drive (we could get in an accident!), we obey the laws (we don’t want to go to jail!), we eat food cooked and prepared by complete strangers... the list goes on, but risk on a basic level is taken in order to survive. The greater the risk the greater the reward... yin/yang in harmony... balance. Conversely, the smaller the risk, the smaller the reward. Again, balance... balance between the balanced.

We risk our time, our health, our bodies, our lives on a daily basis, seeking balance. Balance affords us a level of security... the greater the balance the greater the security. The dualities continue: The security we long for... no need for risk, is fragile, very fragile. Security is shattered like glass that breaks the silence... no longer secure, we reach out to the other side – the safe side, the familiar side, again, seeking that allusive balance. We risk our lives to attain our inner balance adrift in the world that is in constant flux... blowing, going, growing.

The risk in not participating is pretty risky. We can drop out... move to our proverbial little island away from it all, except for what we want, of course. That’s why we call it ‘paradise’... the perfect place of balance which allows us to ‘re’... re-turn. We must re-turn at some point to our little piece of paradise, but even paradise can re-sort our personal hell... out of balance.

Re-balance we re-risk and re-continue re-producing – our energy re-discovering our Self ... always in balance. But matter is always re-evolving itself. Evolution is not what has become but that which is being. That is the balance of nature... the one-ness of all matter. Nature is the ego of Consciousness.

Nature/Consciousness is Life – yin/yang... the penultimate balance... the step before final surrender... we achieve thru risk our reward. Life’s gotta Do for life to Be... our ego-life depends upon it...

We re-ceive the sacrament to attain our one-ness... our true balance. We are in harmony with Life... at ease. No risk in choosing, all is one and we are whole. The balance we achieve is temporal, but we realize our own trilogy... the trinity of physiology, psychology and spirituality. We re-risk in our journey thru the mysteries.

and thank you, truckin' and Arcadia, for stopping by. Always good to see you folks around.

Arcadia, you will have your sabatic year when you need it most, with or without the country... your Self is the most important to find the balance before you can help others do the same.

Well, Cecil...

Risk, reward, balance, evolution, re-evolution..... what an interminable mess..... continuous, omnipresent, micro, macro....

I was stricken with a flu relapse two days ago; this after a full month of sickness already. There is little balance. There is little balance in this place.... a place taken with extremism..... evolution?.... re-evolution?.... de-evolution?.... the process of change, not the results or methods, right?

Risk and reward aren't strictly conjoined.... ask the soldier who risked everything and lost his right leg in Baghdad so that some anonymous Halliburton investor stateside could make a killing....

Balance....

mnaz,Arcadia, Wired... sorry for the delay to your replies. I've been busy working with SooZen on our currrent show. I appreciate them all. Thank you, mucho, mis amigos.

Thank you for your words, and mnaz, you are correct in saying that risk and reward are not "strictly conjoined"... but one must risk in order to gain reward, even if loss is running neck and neck down the track... but is not gamble part of our personal lives? We risk completely to acheive our fullness, each and every life we live in knowing ourselves. How exciting! This energy is what makes our senses come alive, nay?
