maggots for my friends.

yellow bird
dead on the sidewalk
cupped in my hands

twenty bucks
in the land of plenty
when you're broke
a high utility
value what ya got
in a spot of a jam
damn broke.

saw this beggar
no spiritual mendicant
he was standin at the corner
on ramp to the freeway
with his begging sign
he looked so forlorn
an lonesome, I pulled out a five
and he smiled so nice
that the car in front did the same
a money jam
for the beggar man
smiling then, redemption,
validation.
