how soon the shadows
point northeast
winter night
somewhere in the woods
a tree cracks

ten degrees on my outside thermometer
this morning the eaves were a-dangling
with ice sculptures influenced by
yesterday's sun and I love to imagine
that exact second when the dripping water
halted it's elongation of this winter art form
crackling outside all day yesterday
and also in the house, new noices
as you know I'm sure
your house is alive and breathing
just like the frosty air
that challenges the lungs
