Goodnight

I wanted to play again
and pretend
the hard won
hard on was but a transition
submission
rejected like all the rest
i thought my best.

He wants me to see him,
there, in the paint,
a color-connected,
muted saint,
gentle, inviting,
unforgettable man,
gracious, earnest,
true,
like crayon.

Really like this picture.

A prisoner pictured diffused and colored:
I appreciate admire to some degree
but am not fond of it.
Prisoners exist
in harsh, exact lines:
blacks and whites
orange unabomber monkey suits
CDC codes and yard numbers:
specific as sporks and shanks
and Hep C crawling across
frijoles and applesauce;
prisoners are like the ink
that stains them--not so
abstract, not pastel
but precise as 187 on a bicep;
switchblades
and syringes, as a stethoscope
measuring the last few blips
of forgotten pachucos
