Challenge #5

Post by Traveller13 » March 31st, 2005, 5:36 am

For this one, you'll need 4 things.
I)a place or room in which gravity doesn't work normally (at least for a certain period of time)(no explicit reason required)
II)something huge, hairy, with big brown spots and a rough texture (animate or inanimate)
III)the description of eating a mouthfull of peppers
IV)an enormous collection of something that usually isn't collected (like a vast field of geraniums or a park filled with helium-inflated basketballs etc)

The rules are only here to promote inspiration, so feel free to throw them out the window if you feel an independent storyline growing.

As for the nominations, erm, we'll get to that gradually lol.

Oh yeah we pulled negative g's, popcorn floating up from the floor of the cockpit. Those damn mantenance crews! It was only for a moment, though. The shock of floating popcorn at 30,000 feet and 600 knots was more than anything we'd expected.

Only three years earlier, 1967, I'd been wandering about in a deep morning fog watching the patterns of moss and lichens in the mountain pass above the treeline, watching parallel lines of moss patterns in the summer moss garden, a ten feet visual field, wandering with only a single shot rifle and no compass, seeing big brown bear droppings, wondering when one would appear through the fog and my only shot would infuriate it, sounding an alarm for them to start a search party, but they'd have waited. The fog was way too thick. I discovered that I made a complete circle, returning to a prior weather station, incredulous!

I was alone walking a track between weather stations across Chitistone Pass, Alaska, with the geography department, summer fun, all under U.S. Army contract, something about doing line of sight readings on tundra to show what cleared space would do for reconnaisance, line of sight reckoning, the funding, but all we did was to collect and categorise the different mosses along a 1,000 X 1 meter string of squares, pored over, kneadeing and sorting mosses and lichens, on our knees, inscribed into a notebook, micro-climatology, to be published the next year and added to a musty library somewhere far away.....with glow sticks on the stacks.....and the army flew in on choppers on a sunny afternoon, went sheep hunting.

And then I was there three years later, after Alaska, still a boy, flying into Alberquerque, swooping into the Rio Grande Valley down from the sky, over the mountains, like eagles, not knowing that I'd be there again rambling as a bum, never envisioning the fall that was to follow.

all remembered while getting stoned and drunk, years later while driving through chili pepper country in New Mexico along the Rio Grande Valley, where the Indios congregate in taverns and roadside inns, to celebrate their own territory, alive with savory raw juice hot and red peppers to wash away the poverty with a richness of territorial dominion, not Gringo country.

Yes, the glory of Alaskan summers on field research and Air Force talons and wings, screaming down, all changed into simple humble vagabonding, road running thru chili pepper country, heading for Las Cruces and another choice of which way to go, west, or south east, the whole country waiting, impossible do be home again, the price of dissent. Truth is never what it seems and is strange.

A lonely paragraph.

In this room where the heart weighs heavily, I am surrounded by the frightening view of loneliness. I taste the bitterness. I roll it on my tongue. I would spit it out if I could. It overpowers the sweet flavour, the wonderful savour, of memory. Memory, collected daily and dusted with doubt. In this room where the heart weighs heavily, hope lies silently, dying.
I used to walk with my head in the clouds but I kept getting struck by lightning!
Now my head twitches and I drool alot. Anonymouse

Gravity increases, she pulls g-forces
in a room, time passing still life,
taste of bitters, savored unwillingly,
overwhelmed no memories collections photographs,
can spare the pain of a betrayal, or a rejection,
my heaviest fear yet hope creates from the wreck-
age. yet wounded, yes, a wounded dear.

a compaction into diamond!
