I asked you something about kibbutzs but I don´t remember exacly what. Thanks for the information. It´s curious to know that you have ostrichs!! I never eat them. What else do you obtain or commercialize from them?

Very interesting, Judih. I have 'a bunch' of questions -

Do all the folks in your Kibbutz enjoy a meatless diet? No dairy products?

Your laws seem few... do you abide by the laws of the state in addition to your own? Does the state intrude in any way to your lifestyle?

How many years have you been in the Kibbutz?

How many have been born and lived their complete lives on a Kibbutz, i.e., thru death?

Thanks for journey... and congratulations.

Ostriches - arcadia -
we just produce the feed here, we don't raise them. The meat is used as a gourmet status symbol and the eggs are giant - one egg can serve 12.

Cecil -Do all the folks in your Kibbutz enjoy a meatless diet? No dairy products?

- only very few are vegetarian.
Most people eat dairy products - even though milk as we know is not the best food item for humans. Still, Israel, you'll see when you come one day, produces excellent dairy products and the kibbutz is dairy haven (breakfasts thrive on dairy or techina and salads)

Cecil - Your laws seem few... do you abide by the laws of the state in addition to your own? Does the state intrude in any way to your lifestyle?

State laws carry here. The state only intrudes if there's a criminal offence committed - someone breaks into the kibbutz and steals. Now and then the police are called upon if someone wants to charge someone else for some illegality.

Cecil - How many years have you been in the Kibbutz?
i've been on this kibbutz for 10 1/2 yrs.

Cecil - How many have been born and lived their complete lives on a Kibbutz, i.e., thru death?

This kibbutz is only 50 years old, so the ones who were born and died were children, and death was thru illness or genetic fault.
The oldest kibbutz members are in their late 60s and there are some parents of members to add a strata of over 80s and 90s.

I am one of those people who have romanticized kibbutz life. It came from reading a book (I think Exodus) as a teen. I wanted so much to be Jewish, migrate to Israel and live in a kibbutz. Alas, I am not Jewish and did not migrate nor ever had an opportunity to just visit there, exept through my reading.

I enjoyed visiting your site and lerning a little about your life there. It is not quite as romantic as I had always pictured it to be, more practicial in it's operation. Thanks for the visit and pictures.

hello there anniefay!

i missed this comment back then.
Me too. i'd always romanticized the image of kibbutz, since the time my aunt, uncle and their kids decided to live on one for awhile.
My imagination included workboots, long tables for eating and meetings and intense discussions, and for some reason, thin suntanned arms washing dishes in the pale light.

Well, it ain't that way, although many people do sit on their asses and discuss. You're welcome to hop over for a visit.

& cecil, thanks for reading.

judih...my son's girlfriend is spending the summer in israel, including, i think, a week on a kibbutz...it's part of her summer camp, which she does every year

if logistics work out, i.e. if she's going to be near you, i am sure she would love to say hi...she is a sweet girl, one of the best

what city/town are you near?

knip,

Nir Oz is an hour and 1/2 drive, south of Tel Aviv, just west of Gaza.
When is she coming?

It's not going to be easy round here once the evacuation of the settlers begins. That date is still uncertain, but the Army has had the kibbutzim around here cancel their group Bar Mitzvah celebrations so that all those extra visitors won't have to undergo the screening process.

We're all going to be issued IDs to justify our presence in this area.

Could be that I could go meet her in Be'er Sheva if she's round that way.

Let me know.
