Surrounded by hot sleepy summer afternoon
by bluesy solitude – and off-key songbirds
that crackle jack and crow – I’m caught
and gather the practice of the faded sun –
it flows, like a death, alone, combatant
through these un-air-conditioned vents
like a chorus of bells, at a length
like un-cried tears, sung on vocal rise.
Now exhausts itself and sweats, clenched
like a rag over my loneliness – as my
hot persuasion falls and calls the twilight –
the wet scent of this homeless seaboard
of which only I’m aware
when it comes to my feet in tease
to win my vote.
