Well I went to see this documentary of the most famous porno of all. At first I thought it was going to be disgusting and revolting as well. But I had to keep a clear mind about it. After all I had seen reviews about it and it did spark my interest in wanting to go and see it. The movie starts out with general info on it like it cost $25,000 to make but yet it ended up being a very profitable in the end making over $600 million dollars. It then concluded by saying that it opened in New York City on June 12 1972 just five before the break in at Watergate. (hint hint) As I watched it I noticed that there wasn’t much narration in it. The interviews that were given by the people in the movie made up the majority of the movie so that was a surprise at being unique. It started off with the director who made the movie in the first place. He was initially a hairdresser. But every so often he would hear stories from his lady customers about not being stratified a certain “way.” So he decided that this might be an idea to hit upon. He then went into making his own brand of porno movies. But he was more or less just copying what others before him had done. He then came up with an idea to make a porno that would make mark on the mental landscape of the American mindset. So he put together a script and budget so that he could make the kind of movie that he wanted to make. So he got it together and moved his operation of plans down to Florida to make the movie. But he still needed the stars that would make for the film. He would finally come across what he referred to in the doc as his “muse.” Enter in Linda Lovelace who at the time was a nobody to everybody. The movie does go into her background quite well. She came from a middle class environment. What the director called “the girl next door” quality about her. Lovelace was married to this guy who the director knew and some how had a Savagism like presence about him when she married him. I wish the movie had gone into telling his background a little more but anyway. She was head over heels about him and through this one friend of Lovelace. Who is part of the many interviewees of the movie She said that Lovelace’s husband cured her of smoking. But Lovelace’s mother had more of a different view of her daughter’s husband. She the mother said that she would have killed him had he not died before she got around to it. Hmmm interesting to say the least. So the director had one star now he needed to find another to fill out the main stars of the movie. So along comes Harry Reems who at first was apart of the film crew. The director seeing how Reems would be perfect to round out for the final main star. He then fired Reems as apart of the crew and hired him for the starring role. So now everything is in place and the movie is being made. So now comes that all-important scene that makes the movie Deep Throat “Deep Throat” and yes it’s in the document. But it had to be other wise it wouldn’t have made much sense not to put it in because it do center around the movie Deep Throat as well as the controversy that would spread like a political wildfire after the movie came out. The doc then points out that even before the movie was made there was a conservative movement in this country under that tricky dick of a president. I think you know whom I mean!!!! He wanted to see if there was a connection to pornography and if it was corrupting society in general. So the federal government started a huge under taking. Much of it was based on scifitiec studies to see if there was a connection. In the end a big book of so many pages was put out and it was proved that there was no connection and some elected officials agreed as well. But Nixon wanted to prove them wrong by saying that the study was right all the way and he set out to prove them wrong in his own way. But the movie didn’t really get too much into that area. Deep Throat in the mean time opens up and starts to do good business. But it wasn’t until the New York Times writes an article on it calling the movie “Porno Chic.” Soon everybody from the ordinary person to the famous start lining up to see Deep Throat. The movie does a good job on showing the impact that it had on America. There are varies clips of TV and news shows the reaction people had towards the movie. I thought it was cute to see an elderly woman give her opinion on what she had to say about seeing a “dirty picture.” He He!!!! Anyway soon the polical fallout starts to take effect and the makers and the stars of the movie are being hunted down and prosecuted for what as seen as filth. But at the same time they are also being held up as being celebrities as well. Soon Lovelace is being seen and recognized everywhere through out the country. But her mother doesn’t think too highly of it at all. Where as Reems he instead is being made a scapegoat of perversion. He is brought up on charges of indecency and is tired in court. Although some big names in Hollywood come to his rescue and he in turn is riding a wave of popularity just like Lovelace. But in the movie it states the neither Lovelace nor the director were to be prosecuted only Reems. Which the movie didn’t go into length on why that was in the first place. So Reems is crucified just for being in the movie. So now he has to defend himself before the general public. Believe it or not the movie shows him sticking up for himself before none other then Roy Cohen. He was Joseph McCarthy’s Iago during the 50’s when good old McCarthy was running rampant at calling people the “c” word. So Harry Reems defends himself and in the end he is let off the hook because the obensity laws ( what ever that mean) at the time where written after Deep Throat was made. Reems is now a free man but he is a worn out person. Who try’s to get into Hollywood as a serious actor. He is offered a role in the movie Grease but is turned down for it instead. So he ends up becoming a heavy drinker to ease the pain of being rejected by the Hollywood. Who to him his savoir to begin but in the end wanted nothing to do with him. So he went back into porno and his drinking had gotten so bad that he lost his house and ended up pan handling on the streets of LA. He got himself cleaned up and become closer to thee and is now a real estate broker in Utah. Where as Lovelace started to lash out at what had made her famous in the first place as well. She started to join forces with Gloria Steniem and became an advocate against the porno industry. Spoke before a federal committee on how every time Deep Throat is shown she states that she is raped every time. She also wrote a book on it and got out of the limelight and started to become an unknown once again. She would remarry and raise a family and in the end die as a result of injuries she suffered from a car accident in 2002. She did pose for a skin mag as to try and recapture her once glory days as Linda Lovelace just before her death. At the end of the movie the director who thought that Deep Throat would usher in a change in how sex would be apart of the movies. That never happened but instead the whole porno and Hollywood movie industry would change in a different way. The theater in Times Square where Deep Throat had it’s New York City premiere would close down and be changed into a clean version for the American family to view. But this is nothing new to that area it’s just a sign of the times. Just Deep Throat was to certain era of time itself.
