I just got back from seeing La Vie en Rose, a film based on the life story of Edith Piaf. This is probably one of the best films that I've seen in a while (it may even beat out Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, but I've yet to see that, so). The New York Times Review by Stephen Holden expresses it wonderfully:
'Marion Cotillard’s feral portrait of the French singer Édith Piaf as a captive wild animal hurling herself at the bars of her cage is the most astonishing immersion of one performer into the body and soul of another I’ve ever encountered in a film.'
Its amazing how this film manages to be uplifting while it is simultaneously heartbreaking. So, go check it out!
For anyone not familiar with Edith Piaf, here's her singing La Vie en Rose in 1954.

But I liked it a lot
Amazing how many people have covered that song.
Your clip of 1954 version like a Proust cookie for me
Ghosts of Baltimore 1954
Not sure what show Ed Sullivan I guess.
The women in tears watching some old woman sing on TV.
Me about 13 or 14. They made some comments to each other about Piaf. You know little pitchers have big ears, but some how I knew they were talking about her in some adult code that I could not copy. I knew I could ask but I would not get an answer that would be helpful
Not quite understanding what was being said between my mother and grandmother. From the way they were talking about her I got the impression that she had died. But she was still alive at that time. I see now.
I got to see that movie
I have had a soft spot in my heart for her since 1954.
