Dear WIREMAN and Panta:
Zorbicity!
We all need more of it.
Do you two know the excellent film "Cinema Paradiso"
( Italian/French 1988) by Giuseppe Tornatore?
There is a magnificent portrayal of the "straining after life" and celebratory impulses celebrated in "Zorba the Greek" in that film also.
It's a beautiful film, and touches on many themes related to art and the kind of vibrancy, awkwardness and sheer ebullience celebrated in Zorba.
Highly recommended.

One of my teachers, Osho, talks about living a 'Zorba the Buddha life' I try, I do try to take all the zest I can from the moment and laugh out loud daily.
Great flick! One, if not the greatest...

zorbicity, zorbaness, zorbitude -
yes, we all need more of it, indeed.
cinema paradiso - of course i have seen it.
such a warm and poetic, sad and nostalgic movie
(did you see the original version or the one for the north american viewers, norman? i 've heard that more than 50 minutes were cut for the u.s. release...).
-- have you seen leolo by jean-claude lauzon?
poetically bizarre and of a disturbing intensitiy!

Dear Panta:
I saw the long, Italian version of "Cinema Paradiso", and 35 minutes, you're right, were left out of the North American distributed "cut" of "CP."
I like the way you characterized the film, and I agree completely. I have not seen the other film you mention, but I shall look for it at our local video store which has 56,000 films to choose from, some very, very obscure.
