"Atlantic City"

(Canadian/French, 1981-- some directories say 1980--directed by Louis Malle, in English)
This Louis Malle film is one of my favorites. An aging Atlantic City hood ( Burt Lancaster) and a clam bar waitress ( Susan Sarandon) share the loot from a big score.
The ending is wonderful, and each character gets what he or she wants or deserves.
Poetic and full of power and "tristesse."
I love it when Lancaster says, completely defeated, " I didn't protect ya . . ."
But he gets what he deserves, too.
