Some Of the Dharma
Some Of the Dharma
...Kerouac's musings on his Buddhist experience...never ceases to amaze me ...every page...any page...I just pick it up open to any page and get connected...
great book. impossible to transcribe, as it's layed out deliberately and complex by kerouac himself, all over the place, it's a visual and spiritual dream.
and knowing i'm so eager to fight cant make letting me in any easier.

THE ICE SKATE TAO
It isn't time that dulls the
edge of the blade, it's things.
My ice skates haven't been used since 1938.
They're still sharp, no ice has
rubbed the edges. He who ignores
things has made time disappear.

"I could tell she was going to grow up to be a real gone chick" (quoted from memory)
He was talking about the ten year daughter of the oakie truck driver in On The Road
Them real gone chicks ain't what they used to be. What exactly was a real gone chick to him?
I think of Carolyn Cassady getting tired of his late night drunk phone calls, she pretended she could not hear him because of bad phone connection. Eventualy he stopped calling her. This was in the late sixties just before he died. I love Kerouac, if Shakespear had his foibles, god knows st jack had his.

all the beats were misogynist to some degree. not sure what it has to do with some of the dharma. buddhist monks oppose homosexuality, despite all the bullshit.

Firsty put it into context...misoginy now and then...also JK was a very spiritual man...Some Of The Dharma is one of the most important pieces of dharma lit of the 20th century. As far as Homosexuality goes I know the centre where I practice makes a great deal of effort to include the gay community in our agenda......sorry for ranting but I have studied every word JK has ever written and I still don't believe he receives all the credit he deserves...
