A little hard to tell right now as I'm only 30 pages into it. I haven't seen the movie either so I don't know much about the plot.

So far it seems like an indictment of the excesses of the 80's. All the characters are obsessed with their appearances, clothes, houses. The main character/narrator is supposed to be this psychopathic nut and the violence is supposed to be graphic, but I haven't got to any of that yet.

I can tell you that the first 15 pages or so deals with a snobbish dinner party in NY, which is certainly not my cup of tea, but it is written so well that you can just picture these people vividly and they're self-obsessed scum. This guy can really write. More details later.

I pick up ten books for every one I read through.

Just wondering are you still reading it?

yes, still reading. i'm about 275 pages into it. i usually don't bail out on books. i'd say i give up on around 10% or less of them.

the violence is quite graphic. hell, it's really graphic. very well written. not much of a plot though. however, an investigator just showed up to investigate the, ahem, disappearance of one of the characters. stay tuned for further breaking news.

finally finished. the book is fabulous. however, the violence is quite wicked. a tad ambiguous at the end. not much of a plot, but the thrill is the way Ellis writes and the very sick tale he tells.
