Theology

Post by one of those jerks » January 9th, 2009, 2:20 pm

Kaufmann was brought up in the Lutheran faith. At age 11, he found he believed neither in the Trinity nor that Jesus was God, and thus converted[1] to Judaism. The rise of Nazism did not deter his conversion. Kaufmann subsequently discovered that his grandparents were all Jewish. In a 1959 Harper's Magazine article, he summarily rejected all religious values and practice, Christianity in particular, praising instead moralists such as the biblical prophets, the Buddha, and Socrates.[2] He believed that critical analysis and the acquisition of knowledge were liberating and empowering forces. He forcefully criticized the fashionable liberal Protestantism of the 20th century (e.g. Rudolf Bultmann, Paul Tillich, and Karl Barth) as filled with contradictions and evasions, preferring the austerity of the book of Job and the Jewish existentialism of Martin Buber. Kaufmann disliked Heidegger, on substance, and for lack of clear writing. Kaufmann expounded his beliefs in Critique of Religion and Philosophy, among many other books.~wiki

truck, as i was perusing your extensive list of definitions for the word, theology. i was struck by the extent god and religion have become one. no, not foolish. it was simply a recognition that the two words, god and religion, are so enjoined they're like twins.

but that really is not, or should not, be absolute. this human quest for (a) god to answer mankind's eternal questions should not be filed under 'religion', 'theology; or even 'god.' Or at least the grouping will include the more powerfully complete of the three, the word 'spiritual'...

for years, as you probably already know, i have been an outsider's practitioner of the philosophies of the East. in so doing i have almost naturally been attracted to the music that 'lives' within these eastern philosophies.

to make this a much shorter reply, i would like for you to try this link (click 'listen') and take in the words of one Jai Uttal, a musician that i've been following for several years now. this little interview puts the words of the spiritual into the hands of all of us, not in the exclusivity of any religion or theocratic philosophy... the way i feel it should be.

anyway, i hope you enjoy what he has to say, get a taste of some of his music and his influences, and end the 10 mins with a smile on your face. what more need there be..? :)

The little I know about Theology tells me it is about God, or about no god.
Rertrand Bussell say Buddhism is a god-less religion.
For some threason I space out on the word theology and start thinking about theocracy.

There is not a word for god anymore.
Never was really I think that is what the Hebrew children meant, there is no word for god.
That is why they spelt it G-d maybe.

Man those guys were word freaks.

I know the feeling.

I forgot the word

"where can i find a man who forgets about words and ..."

I heard a mad man say that Hindu's built the temple and the Jews wired it for sound.

Jazz is spiritual music too

I used to sit in the audience at the Left Bank Jazz Society concerts and wonder why people around me would spontaneously broke in to applause.

Good luck reading this. I don't have firefox on this computer.

g'day to you, truck! (a little of the Aussie-speak there for some reason)

Do you remember a fellow that went by 'feral911' and after the 9/11 thing he dropped the 911 to simply 'feral'? Jason. Pretty outrageous character back then. I know you know him, cyber-speaking. He's been involved with working in those huge mines in western Australia for years now and is living with a gal he meant at work. They bought a house outside of Perth... a small town 'Donnybrook.' He's doing good last i heard. Still has the damn aussie humor... funny as hell, imho.

Strange I thought of that. it has nothing whatsoever to do with anything in your (2) posts, but somehow it derailed me into Western Australia. Maybe it was the desert comment on the Naz photo... beautiful shot. The solitariness of the desert is always magnified by the breadth of your vision when surrounded by the low growth plants....

of course being around one mile up on our Franklin Mountains aids immensely with the commanding view all the way to the horizon.

(still wondering what the stream will be. damn. play it by fingertip, i reckon.)

later, amigo.
