Thucydides

The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.

I used to like him
But Glory is not what it used to be

The strong do what they have to do and the weak accept what they have to accept.

thucydides is a treasure trove. method, objectivity - incidental insights into earlier (pre- thucydides) greek history. one comes away with something new each time you read him. maybe even moreso with herodutus, as he covers a vast array of history, legend, geographical asides, etc. both are indispensable. thucydides' reenactment of pericle's funeral speech for the athenian casualties of the war with sparta lays out what democracy should be - what it meant to be athenian - at least, theoretically. that alone, is worth the price of admission.

Father of historical science

He would probably have his own show on the Fox Network if he was alive today.

Be a Professor at the University of Chicago

i'm going to tranfer to univ. of cincinnati in the winter quarter for ancient studies. i think i told you that. university of chicago is very appealing, but kind of expensive. might be able to do graduate work there or transfer to american univ. in athens - if i'm lucky. that's the plan anyway. who knows. best-laid plans...

His voice so modern.

Twenty five hundred years

What has changed?

They say the Greeks invented historical science, and the Jews invented historical religion.

I envy you your plans.

I have no plans anymore.

Just one day slipping into the next.

But I put some thought into my funeral.

First one to attribute human events to the actions of humans, not to gods.
