April 19

Post by stilltrucking » April 19th, 2010, 10:25 am

Striking as the tapes may be, the audio alone cannot satisfy the modern demands of TV news documentaries, so MSNBC hired an actor to play McVeigh and used a computer animation effect to make the actor resemble McVeigh. This figure then travels through a re-created, blandly poetic-looking Midwestern collage of interstate highways, storage units, faraway farms and, finally, the streets of downtown Oklahoma City.

The effect is jarring at first, feeling a bit like a fanatic's version of "Grand Theft Auto" video games. But it works, especially as it reenacts that unforgettable morning, with McVeigh sitting at the stoplight half a block from the federal building, igniting a two-minute fuse. He grows increasingly nervous as he waits for the light to change and the cab of the truck fills with smoke. "I swear to God that's the longest stoplight I've ever sat at in my life," he said, with a chuckle.

Watching this, it's easy to feel like that fuse is still lit.

The McVeigh

Tapes: Confessions

of an American Terrorist

(one hour) airs at 9 p.m. Monday

on MSNBC.

It don't mean nothing
justa
juxta
position
Militia movement will be packing heat at rally on the Potomac
Armed, angry ... and rallying
Dozens of self-proclaimed patriots plan to protest what they see as trampled rights.

April 19 is the anniversary of the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995 and the government's final confrontation in 1993 with the Branch Davidian cult members in Waco, Tex. But Almond said he chose the date to honor the anniversary of the 1775 battles at Lexington and Concord that began the Revolutionary War, "and that is the only reason."

I'm planning on watching the McVeigh special and see how one of my favorite commentators, Rachel Maddow, did in putting this together.

I don't watch TV anymore.
Just the occasional movie or video on the internet.

I hope you enjoyed the show

Howdy, JT... Soo and I both got sucked up in that McVeigh documentary which was done in an interesting way - using actors but digitally putting in McVeigh's looks/features so it looked very much like him. And they also used many tapes which were recorded during his incarceration describing exactly the steps that led him to his dastardly and cowardly act. Surprisingly well done, IMHO.

Your mention of Net movies and such reminded me of a site I came upon yesterday that I perused for a while. I thought it was so good I told my son and old friend about it as they enjoy movies of all types.

When you have the time see what you think of -

Too frustrating for me to watch TV anymore. Ever since they went to the digital format I can't get much reception here. Even with the digital converter box and a thirty dollar antenna. I miss TV I just can't deal with the frustration of getting up ever three minutes when the signal goes haywire and that happens everytime a train goes by. And trains go by sometimes three or four in an hour. I live a hundred yeards from the main line of the Southern Pacific.

I would probably watch that show about McVeigh too. I don't want to spend the money for cable TV.

Today we have Columbine. April is a cruel month.

Thanks for the link. Going to check it out.

Spring A.D. (by George Seferis, 16 March, 1939)

Again with spring
she wore light colors
and with light steps
again with spring
again with summer
she was smiling.

Among fresh blossoms
breast naked to the veins
beyond the dry light
beyond the white old men
debating quietly
whether it would be better
to give up the keys
or to pull the rope
and hang from the noose
to leave empty bodies
there where souls couldn't endure
there where the mind couldn't catch up
and knees buckled.

With the new blossoms
the old men failed
and gave up everything
grandchildren and great-grandchildren
the broad fields
the green mountains
love and life
compassion and shelter
rivers and sea;
and they departed like statues
leaving behind a silence
that no sword could cut
that no gallop could break
nor the voices of the young;
and the great loneliness came
the great privation
along with this spring
and settled and spread
like the frost of dawn
caught hold of the high branches
slid down the trunks of trees
and wrapped around our soul.

But she smiled
wearing light colors
like a blossoming almond tree
in yellow flames
and walked along lightly
opening windows
in a delighted sky
without us, the luckless ones.
And I saw her breast naked
the waist and the knee
who rises out of torment
like the untouched martyr
on his way to the heavens
untouched and clean
beyond the inexplicable
whispering of people
in the boundless circus
beyond the black grimace
the sweaty neck
of the exasperated executioner
striking vainly.

The loneliness now a lake
the privation now a neck
untouched and untraceable.
