Something to do with the tax laws, the less inventory on hand the less taxes to be paid. So minds behind the free hand of the marketplace devise Just In Time delivery. So needed items appear by magic the moment they are needed. Perfectly logical and reasonable solution to the problem.

So you haul ass for twenty four hours no sleep, and you walk up on the loading dock and tell the clueless foreman that you have to be unloaded immedeately because those caps are due on the production line. But he don't hear you out because you stink, look like a bum, and his brother in law got run over by a truck last week. And he proceeds to show you his ass.
