I live to create, fucking art for the masses, this bitch loves to rock!
Beth Isbell
- my personal haiku! :)

"I am the hippie love child of Janis Joplin & Jim Morrison, except that one day while Jimbo took a trip in the desert, Janis was in NYC banging Lou Reed. It's all a little fuzzy from there ... and yes, I'm actually a girl! ... well, currently!" :)

A fan & new friend Johnnie Pegues recently posted this comment on her FaceBook page after seeing me play ... we only just met & this was the first time she ever heard me perform ...
I think it's a bit much & it makes me blush, but still very very cool ...
"Those of you who know me well will know that I am a music person, blues in particular. I am telling you tonight that I have, in my life, carried guitars for two musicians......one belonged to Buddy Holly, the other was tonight for Beth Isbell. There are many pedestrian and so-so blues people out there.....Beth is extraordinary. If you truly appreciate blues, Beth Isbell is your avenue to reality." Johnnie Pegues, KDGE Radio, Dallas, Texas

Short Bio: "A three time finalist in the USA Songwriting Contest & a TAXI Top 10 Pick, Beth Isbell's guitar playing, vocal delivery & songwriting have been described by national music press as "innovative," "edgy," "subversive," "alternative art at its best!" As "passionate" frontperson & guitarist of several successful local Texas bands, with a successful solo USA acoustic tour, & highly acclaimed CD releases in multiple genres spanning from psychedelic, indie, blues rock, & blues to Americana, folk & country ...
Beth Isbell is "an artist who is truly one of a kind!" :)

"PRETTY GOOD THOUGHT PROVOKING LOU REED STYLE PUNK ...
OR SOMETHING!!"
... a fan ... I just love my fans!
:)

I think of my self as a songwriter first, but I love to perform! I think of my writing and "sound" as very much like both the acoustic Neil Young and the electric Crazy Horse Neil Young, but sung with a voice which is often compared to David Bowie. When you add a full band, my singing often morphs to add the passionate delivery and craziness of a Janis Joplin or Jim Morrison. But it all starts with great songs delivered with pure passion! :)

Yes, this CD has its own Sesame Street theme song describing the essential concept behind the Aardvark: the celebration of the unique, proud, brave, & weirdly fascinating! As an artist, I sometimes feel like an Aardvark and see my music as an Aardvark, and this funny little song/video captures the whole theme quite nicely!

... Reviews of the "Aardvark" ...

"It's a very special little Aardvark, mighty and strong,
not overproduced, raw and real - I love it!"

Review by Red Parlor Recording Artist Manda Mosher
(who's band performed on the Craig Ferguson show earlier this year!)

“A Fringe Fest performer, and alternative in the extreme, Isbell is an OK-based artist whose every note is invested with an edgy, subversive quality. Recorded raw, with just a guitar and the artist’s unusually deep, masculine voice, these are the songs of a message artist, one whose lyrics are primary. That’s especially so of American which reveals itself to be a political diatribe and anti-war song. Magic might be the most memorable song due to its engaging, singalong format. Isbell emits an outsider essence that we find compelling!
Overall Score 7.4

Review by Music Connection magazine - p. 48 (Aug 2009 issue)

""Beth Isbell is an edgy, lyric-based performer who never fails to invoke emotion with her music. Each song on this EP is there for a reason; because Beth had something to say. You’ll be entertained by her writing, her unique vocal style, and her innovative uses of technology to make this mostly bare-bones release shine. Isbell doesn’t have to do much more than grab a guitar and start singing to get her point across. Her politics are seldom hidden but she keeps it all within the realm of decent freedom of speech. While you may derive your own meaning, the lyric 'I don’t want to be un-American, but I don’t want to be an American idol…' says so much about Isbell. The symbolism is thick and exists on so many levels. Isbell covers Radiohead’s 'Creep' and offers five original compositions in this half-dozen EP. Beth will be heard. You might as well hear her now so you’ll have a chance at understanding. Isbell’s life has been hard and full of personal trials, crushing defeats, and remarkable triumphs. Each have found their way to this disc. This is alternative art at its best; shunning the mainstream and shouting the message!""
Review by Lucky Boyd, My Texas Music (Jul 27, 2009)

The first time I played "Happy" live, a girl in the audience told me "that's the best song I've ever heard!" :) The funk-rock piece "Magic" has already won an Auddy award as a potential Platinum hit. "Ruby" just rocks! "Creep" is for me, because I feel that way sometimes. "American" is the Anti-American Idol song ... and more. My personal favorite is "Work," which is about songwriting, or even about relationships. Anyway, hope you dig the Aardvark!

Every song on this psychedelic rock CD featuring the amazing Mike Clark on lead electric guitar, Beth on vocals & acoustic rhythm guitar, & Carol Dierking on drums [she now tours with Alligator records recording artist Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King] was recorded LIVE ... the first four tracks were recorded with a portable 8 track live during rehearsal & the last four tracks were tape recorded live at one of the band's shows at Muddy Waters in Dallas, TX [so we hope you feel, as we do, the nice performance overcomes the poorer quality of the tape recordings]. The 2008 officially released version of this CD includes two bonus tracks but I've just included the 8 live recordings actually by The Dead Prophets here.

Recorded in a top flight Nashville studio with producer Matt Wilder, this country, folk & americana CD features some of Nashville's best studio musicians, including folks that have toured & recorded with Faith Hill & Rascal Flatts. The title cut was the #1 country song in the Texas Top 40 in 2006, a TAXI top 10 pick in July 2008, & voted #1 by fans at Ourstage.com in February 2009. ... Some smoking hot performances by my OKC blues-rock band "Ed" caught on tape at a live show at The Biting Sow in OKC ... so excuse any poor sound quality issues with the tape - the performance is killer; features the amazing Stephen Henderson on lead electric guitar!

The Flying Lennys Studio Demo Sessions (2002 - 5 original rock songs):
Listen for Free! http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1604355
These songs were all written & recorded at different studios with my very first band The Flying Lennys, featuring members of the original band &/or various studio musicians hired along the way ... worthy of noting ... “Sunshine” features jazz legend Joe McBride on keyboards! & was included on Beth's first 4 song demo EP $50 & a Cigarette released in 2004 (now out of stock) ... and Brigitte Miller is the vocalist and co-writer on the last song "Naked Again" released on her band Naked Violet's self-titled debut cd in 2004.

NEW SONGS (August 2010) - featuring Beth Solo Acoustic ... "Shine On" (aka Big) ... it's very radio friendly - feel free to share it! :)

AND "Breathe" ... about that situation we've all been in where a relationship ends for one person before it ends for the other ...

New Full Band Songs! (July 2010) - full band electric blues cover versions of B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" and "Let the Good Times Roll" featuring Beth on vocals & for the first time ever also on lead guitar! :)
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/2749571
Note: you can download the mp3s for FREE from this site!

New Original Song Recording (May 2010) - "She's Not Catholic" this is the scratch track demo of my latest post-punk indie rock song ... my attempt to write a song in the style of The Pixies, but with a new updated sound ... can't wait to put a full band on this in the studio - this song totally rocks! :)
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/2741021

Acoustic Blues version of "Merry Christmas Baby!" ... my special Christmas 2009 gift to friends & fans! :)
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/2179403
(You can also download this version for free at Beth's ReverbNation site: http://www.reverbnation.com/bethisbell)

"The Dildo Song" :), ... (yes, you read that correctly!)
Humor from the female point of view! ... and this song was a finalist in the comedy category of the 2009 USA Songwriting Contest!
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1651303

New reggae song "NbLove" (aka Nothin' But Love) - Irie! Peace!
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1384728
I was going to include this one on Aardvark, but it didn't really fit stylistically, so saving it for a future release of softer-sided tunes.

Anti-war protest song - "Warmonger"
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1538985
I love this song, but wrote it about the Bush-Cheney Administration, so not sure I want to release it in the age of Obama ... but I still might re-record it & release it so that future generations can use it if need be.

2 versions of the same song - one grunge, one punk!!
"Camille (the little filthy skank)" ...
http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1383485
OK, neither is new or a work in progress as both were included on The Dead Prophets Bonus Edition CD released in 2008, but are included because I like the contrast & comparison.

Beautiful new song ... "Breathe" ... one of the prettier songs I've ever written! ... http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1529839
I was going to include this one on Aardvark, but it didn't really fit stylistically, and really need to get a better recording of it, so saving it for a future release of softer-sided tunes. The full band version of this song that we've done live at shows is just killer!

• And finally, something beautiful & spiritual to leave you with ...

30 seconds of beauty - Amazing Grace (a capella):

wow!... :D what I heard (the reggae and the flying lennys) sounded like perfect music for a friday, great sound!!!!!!!!!!

I also liked the way the reverbnation link worked in my computer: I could listen to the songs with perfect sound and in a instant or I couldn´t open the files at all, I call that direct!

gracias for sharing your songs with us, beth!!!!

(I´ll keep open files in the following days! )

Just got the new Masters back for Aardvark ... so what is currently posted is the final product! Totally rocks! 6 song solo acoustic indie rock EP.

(Note - all the songs in the Reverbnation "Aardvark" Tunepak player are the highest quality 320kbps mp3 files, except the last song Work which is a 192 kbps mp3 file - [the 320 of Work was just slightly too big for ReverbNation - all the versions in my myspace player are the larger 320 kbps mp3 files, including Work]): http://www.myspace.com/bethisbell

Found a couple more of the old studio demos for The Flying Lennys & have added them into the player to now make a total of 5 songs. Check it out, some cool early tunes featuring some great players, including jazz legend & Heads Up recording artist Joe McBride on keyboards doing a live take on one of the songs "Sunshine" (no shit - he lived around the corner from my house at the time & we became friends) ...
