Beth's Year End Music News

Hey, this little acoustic blues cover of "Merry Christmas Baby!" I recorded a couple of days ago is taking off on you tube! Never really had a song do that, so that's very cool ... thank you! Over 400 hits in just 3 days! Cool! And, it's got picked up by some local radio stations for airplay in OKC/Dallas, which is way cool! Playing on KGOU 106.7 FM in OKC this Sun 2pm!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtFy03idSc0

Wrote & recorded this new Christmas folk song Christmas Eve morning ... "A Father's Love Will Never Fail" (The Christmas Flower Song) ... this one's very folk/americana with a really beautiful story/message ... some folks have sent me really nice comments about it, so that's good ... & it's my parents' new favorite! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpvN5LjN8DM

In news for my music friends & fans ... I auditioned for Berklee College of Music earlier this month, will find out in a month or so ... also, I'm moving to Dallas in February & working on booking gigs down there in Texas, so hope my Texas friends will come out & have some fun! While I was in Dallas for the Berklee audition, stopped by & jammed with my friend Perry Jones at the Goat & rocked the house, got the crowd really into it! Perry's been playing 40 years & paid me a huge compliment: "Thanks Beth you have improved alot , not just the playing and singing but the flow of fun you have makes the party!!!" In addition to the cover of Merry Christmas Baby & the original folk song I wrote & recorded in the past couple of days (above) ,,, I wrote two new original blues songs this past weekend & played them at the Blues Saloon blues jam Sunday night & that went great - which is a really good feeling when new songs go over so well - maybe I am finally getting better at it! :),

In August, I released a 6 song acoustic solo indie rock EP called "Aardvark," which features some nice originals & a cover of Radiohead's creep ... my little Aardvark received a really nice new music review & high rating in national music magazine Music Connection, so that was cool! ... Anyway, hope you'll take time to check it out & maybe adopt your own "Aardvark" ...

Buy: http://www.mytexasmusic.com/bethisbell/

Towards the end of 2009, I also put together a collection of 2008/2009 music videos on youtube & as a promotional item give away at my live shows on DVD called "Revolution!" So come to a show & get one, I only have a few left, the DVD turned out really nice with a really cool menu ... features some really nice live solo performances, the quality of the sound could be better here & there, but most of it was recorded with a video camcorder with it's build in mic, so considering, turned out pretty good ... here's a link to Side 1 "Classic Psychedelia": http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... EE3B985CE9 ... & Side 2 "More Coffee Please!": http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... E11078CFEA

I'm having a going away party/show in OKC at the Red Cup on Sat. Jan. 23rd, so if you're in OKC, hope you'll stop by and say hello! ... Also, have some gigs booked in Texas later this Spring & Summer, including one in La Grange, Texas in May (that's right that La Grange - "ahaw, haw, haw - but I might be mistaken!). I also had an original song selected as a Top 10 finalist in the comedy category of the USA Songwriting Contest - my second year in a row to do that! :), Won a comedy song contest earlier this year & used the prize coupon on Amazon to buy my twins & their mom a new Mandolin for Christmas - have been showing them how to play it & they learn quick! :), And, my Merry Christmas Baby song is airing on KGOU 106.7 FM here in OKC/Norman, OK this Sunday 2pm - if you're not in OKC, you can still listen to it here: http://www.kgou.org ... So overall, rough year financially, but have worked hard to get better musically on guitar & at songwriting & performing and think that's finally going to start showing up next year - so feel confident that 2010 will be a lot of fun! Hope to see you at a show sometime soon! :),

Moving back to Dallas may be good news for those of you who like my old Dallas psychedelic rock band The Dead Prophets (with me, Big Mike Clark & Carol Dierking): http://www.myspace.com/thedeadprophets ... so if all works out, everybody agrees & if we can work around Carol's busy schedule (which is a big if), look for some TDP shows maybe this Spring or by Summer in the Dallas area! Big Mike is working on a new progressive rock CD, which if it's as good as his first one, you should definitely put that on your buy list! Beth is writing songs for a new blues CD - probably with a full band this time! Carol is still on tour with Alligator Records recording artist Smokin' Joe Kubek & having lots of fun! Beth won several songwriting contests this year & had a song make the top 10 finalists of its category in the 2009 USA Songwriting Contest, for the second year in a row! All 3 of us are much better musicians than when we were playing as TDP regularly back a few years ago. We had a surprise reunion show of sorts last year & that was fun. Anyway, not sure how all this will work out - but might be really cool! So stay tuned in 2010! (ps-Big Mike's website is http://www.intodown.com & Carol's Facebook is http://www.facebook.com/carol.dierking ... so please check both of them out, they're great musicians!)

I'm also looking to put together a working blues rock band upon moving to Dallas, so if you're interested, send me a message here on FB or e-mail me ... roxybeast@hotmail.com

And here are some really cute videos of my twins with some great classic songs from Nat King Cole & Vince Gill ... definitely worth checking out!

Made this video of the twins first real Christmas a couple years ago (2005) when they were only 2 years old ... very, very cute with a great soundtrack (What Child Is This by Vince Gill) ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPd7tRhQmDA

Another super-cute Christmas video-Nat King Cole's Christmas Song & my twins 1st real Christmas! (2005) ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvavBagBB7c

Here's another cute Christmas video of the twins 2007 Christmas set to Vince Gill's Santa Claus Is Coming to Town! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8mcsrRRf1s

Hope you & yours are having some great holidays & hope to see you soon!

Peace,
Beth Isbell

Sample acoustic show booking letter:

Dear ......

I'd like to book an acoustic show at your venue on ...... at .... pm.
(include discussion of suggested door, terms, equipment, etc).

Here's my main music website with plenty of music samples to listen to ... it's had almost 5000 hits since created last April ... http://www.studioeight.tv/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=16212

You can find bio/info on my Sonicbids epk: http://www.sonicbids.com/bethisbell
or at Myspace ... http://www.myspace.com/bethisbell

As you know, I currently live in OKC, but am moving to Dallas the end of this month, so by the time I play this show, I would be from Dallas and that's how you should list me.

I expect that my draw in ......... at this point for this type of acoustic show is about 25-50 persons on a ........... night at this point, but I'm working hard on improving that. I have about 900 or so Facebook friends and about 1/3 to 1/2 of those are in the Dallas area, and recently I've been targeting friends on pages of Dallas organizations & clubs that cater to the type of music I play to add more. I have previously played The Goat, Club Clearview, Club Dada, Muddy Waters, Winedale Tavern, Poor Davids Pub, Double-Wide, Django's, Sons of Hermann Hall, and lots of other venues all over the DFW area, some solo/duo acoustic & quite a few with various bands. I have played shows all over the country - Atlanta, GA, New Orleans, LA, Boulder, CO, etc., including Pride, New Music, Blues & other festivals with audiences from 100 to 800 (or more)

I have released 5 CDs/EPs to date -- all of which are included on my main music website above:
The Good Woman Waltz (2005) (folk/americana full band)
Live at Blue Moon (2008) (indie rock solo acoustic)
The Awakening EP (2008) (indie folk/blues solo acoustic)
The Dead Prophets (2008) (psychedelic rock/blues full band)
Aardvark EP (2009) (indie rock solo acoustic)

I was a finalist in both the 2008 & 2009 USA Songwriting Contest (actually had 2 songs in 2008) and was a Top 10 Songwriter choice by TAXI in July 2008, had a #1 song at Ourstage.com in Feb. 2009, & have regularly had songs make the top 10 charts in multiple categories at Broadjam.com My most recent EP received a nice review by national music magazine Music Connection Aug 09.

I communicate with fans mostly on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bethisbell

I look forward to working with you, helping to draw a good crowd, & putting on an entertaining & energetic show. Thank you for your consideration.

Peace,
Beth Isbell

This is an interesting concept & I have heard friends talk about it - this program allows you to actually slow down mp3s to half speed but at the original pitch - to allow you to learn solos/riffs ... costs about $60.00 to order, but you can sign up & receive a free download sample program that works, but has some limitations. I'm not recommending this program, but think it might be worth at least checking out & if it works and you can drop the $60 they require, then cool ...

Finally, if you know of any other sites that contain free blue or rock (or other) backing tracks, then please leave a reply with the link below or e-mail me at roxybeast@hotmail.com or find me on Facebook & send me a message ... http://www.facebook.com/bethisbell

I'll check it out & if it is free with no strings attached, see about adding it to the list.

Thanks & hope you have fun jamming to 1,000s of free tunes!!!

Peace,
Beth Isbell

Current List of Acoustic Music Open Mics in OKC
(updated as of Jan 2010)

This is a current list of acoustic music open mics in the OKC Area as of January 2010 that I've been able to put together from current info from musicians & music lovers in the OKC area. NOTE--I have not included poetry open mics, just ones that allow acoustic music although some of these events may also allow poetry. Please feel free to correct it - post any other OPEN MICS you're aware of as a reply or let me know if any of these listings is no longer correct. Thanks for your input. Hope it's helpful!

The most popular open mic in OKC used to be at Galileo on Thursday nights, but the owner died recently & the club shut down. This is the song that Matt Kemp played on the Sunday Blues Cruise on KRXO 107.7 here in OKC last night ... "A minor Blues" by The Dead Prophets featuring Big Mike Clark on lead guitar, me on acoustic & Carol Dierking on Drums! ... It's always fun to be driving & all the sudden hear one of your songs on the radio! :)

I also performed the first ever uptempo blues version of this song last night at the Blues Saloon & also performed the Neil Young cover version at my acoustic show at the Red Cup Saturday night! Way too much fun! :)
