Doreen, now you have me convinced, like you have L-Rod convinced that you really don't have any sense of humor ... I know you think & may even claim otherwise, but I think if you do have any sense of humor it's got to be very limited or boxed-in ... some of the set-up & punchlines that I've used for these jokes have been from studies which gathered up the 100 funniest jokes as voted by the reaction of people from almost all English speaking countries in the world - so the rest of the world thinks they are funny, scientifically proven, thus, if you don't, ... conclusion?

Maybe you can just substitute the name of someone you truly despise in the joke instead of Bristol Palin & maybe the humor lightbulb will finally come on. Or, perhaps you could just come up with a joke about Bristol that portrays her as smarter than men, etc., and paints her in a good light - the point is to be funny, & not to bring everybody down.

I did ask you to come over here and post your links to support groups & medical info to help high school girls who have been raped or sexually assaulted (in the event someone who has been somehow wound up looking at this page). Hopefully, if you do, you can be witty.

I think really you have some insane need to defend Bristol against the jokes because you take them personally - they obviously aren't written or intended to be about you and she & her family are obviously quite able to defend herself (after all, they forced CBS into making Letterman apologize). I'm thinking that actually, they don't need your help at all ... so consequently this makes your comments as deriving only from a personal desire for you to try to spoil the fun anyone else might have about this particular subject which you feel a personal need to defend.

I think the jokes are funny & lots of other folks do too ... some folks don't, which is also ok, but if you're going to complain, then try using a little humor to make your point - you're lack of humor is the issue.

Just heard this one on TV ... "so did you guys hear that joke about the horse with a wooden leg ... yeah, you remember, Paul McCartney's ex-wife?" ... so we laughed ... did you? If you're Heather Mills, or in her family, or a friend of hers or just a disabled person with a prosthetic leg, you probably would not find it funny - the ability to see the humor in any joke is clouded by your own reality. I think that folks that like Sarah Palin politically won't like these jokes - which is partially why I write them (& lots of folks have fun adding punchlines) ... but apparently you, as a former pregnant teen, also get caught in the crossfire, don't find the humor in them & side with the Sarah Palin camp ... but for those of us who weren't pregnant teens or Palins ... these jokes & most of the punchlines are pretty damn funny!!!

Well hells bells if Clay said it, I am convinced too.  :P

A bitchy thing to say in my opinion, but this could be a chick issue. Like Clay I am an idiot about woman's issues. As I remember Clay was not only speaking of Doreen he was speaking in universals, he also said WOMEN do not have a sense of humor and you are proving him right sister

No, I don't take the "jokes" personally at all. They're not about me. How could they remotely be about me? And I definitely have a great sense of humor. I keep the folks laughin' around here, no doubt about it.

I write humorous poetry also. Haven't you read any of it? Where have you been? Some of my posts online are stand-up comedy routines. You've really missed a lot, I guess, Beth! :D

That's the point. I laugh at funny stuff.

Just sayin'.... if YOU think it's funny, OK, but I don't find that ridiculing people is funny. And what's wrong with me saying that? I mean, why do your readers have to ALL think what you're intending as funny is funny? Do you think everyone in the audience is going to laugh just because you find this type of slamming humor to be funny? I'm quite certain I'm not the only one who wouldn't find it funny.

You deleted all the research I did on your facebook thread. All the links I posted are gone. I'd have to spend some time doing that research again if you want me to post the links.

I didn't understand that that's what you wanted. I thought you wanted to delete all my posts and request that I post my opinions on this thread on my own website rather than on your facebook page.... and so I complied with your request.

Sorry to have posted my opinion again, really. I didn't expect it to turn into a debate. I really just wanted to say that in my opinion, calling a young lady a slut and a whore and a drunk and ridiculing her life just because she got pregnant isn't at all fair and isn't funny.

Here's some statistics for you
Thirty-four percent of young women become pregnant at least once before they reach the age of 20 -- about 820,000 a year. Eight in ten of these teen pregnancies are unintended and 79 percent are to unmarried teens.
http://www.familyfirstaid.org/teen-pregnancy.html

34% is a LOT! Are ALL of those young ladies sluts? Please tell me that isn't true!

34% of all of our teenage girls are slutty whores and probably drunks, too, right?

Here's another one
One-third of U.S. girls sexually active by age 15.
http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-152033521.html

Are 1/3 of all girls sluts? Just wondering if being sexually active denotes being a slut? I call it being human, myself.
Is there a line anymore that comedians do not cross? When did it become okay to target children for the sake of a laugh? Would Letterman like people to make these kinds of horrid comments about his young son, even if they were in the name of comedy? It is all too easy these days to say, “I was just joking” or “I am a comedian; it is my job”. But the truth of the matter is that, if attacking innocent children is your only source of humor, maybe you need to find a new line of work. It isn’t necessary, and it sure as heck is not funny.
http://www.wlkm.com/?p=5402

Fact is, such jokes are in poor taste. That's my opinion and you can accuse me of having no sense of humor if you want, and to that, I answer, "I don't laugh at jokes that don't taste good."

;)

And I sincerely apologize for starting a debate. I really didn't intend that. I don't want to debate about what's funny and what's not. I simply wanted to express my opinion.

Have a good day.

Doreen ... here's a little humor test ... "An 18 year old blonde girl found herself on a college campus on the first day of school ... confused, she walked up to a security guard and said ... 'I must be lost, how can I get to the nearest mall from here?'"

So Doreen, is this joke ... funny ... or not funny?

80% unintended and 79% to unmarried teens. Remarkable. Bristol Palin fits right in with her peer group. What does she do for a living? How does she pay for the throw-away diapers and fake mother's milk? Let's see.... her parents?
The United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world. Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $7 billion (7,000,000,000.00) annually.
How does a country deal with statistics like this? Is humor not a release from this distorted reality that we are unable to control?

These are truly pathetic statistics that we should all be appalled by? Who normally ends up raising these kids? We know the answer. How many of these kids have no medical insurance at all? We know the answer. How many of these kids are undernourished or ill-fed? We know the answer. But we don't do a damn thing to discourage this behavior, despite the $7 BILLION annual cost to a country struggling to control its debt load.

Sure! We need some humor to release the anger. We are out of control as a nation in so many regards that we either accept our depression and take more and more drugs and drink ourselves into a coma daily ... or we can laugh. We are credit poor, savings starved, poorly nourished from our fast food/frozen food/pre-cooked food inadequate diets and we're undereducated to boot. What is our future... this great country of ours that is the (supposed) Beacon of Light to the freedom loving peoples of the world?

And here we squabble over something as trite as humor - is it right or is it wrong? Ridiculous.

Thanks, Dor', for the stats and the link. It made my day.

Yep. Agreed. Sure we need humor. Funny humor. Not ridiculing humor. The statistics are indeed shocking. But they point out one important fact.... adolescents are sexual beings and often sexually active. That doesn't make them bad people or sluts.

How old were you when you became sexually active? I was 15 or 16. Like most people.

I'd bet most people reading this thread became sexually active during their adolescent years. Why? Because it's NORMAL to do so.

.....

And Beth? I've never been much for blonde jokes. That one was particularly stupid and mildly amusing.

If you want to "test" my sense of humor, simply visit the Humor forum where I've posted a myriad of funny posts.

You betcha! But why does our country have such a large percentage of 'unintended' pregnancies..? It sounds like too many ignorant teens are having unprotected* sex or not interested in any alternative sexual acts, much less listen to anyone. Why is that?

[*yes... I read you got pregnant while using the pill daily. but you don't believe that large a percentage are using any method of birth control, do you?]

Personally I don't care if 13 year olds (oh no! they do!!) want to have sex, but shouldn't somebody, i.e. a parent, a relative, a teacher, a sibling... someone? inform them HOW they become pregnant BEFORE they fuck their little brains out? Our teens collectively have got to be the most uninformed youths in the world today... why is that? Why can't we as a Nation do something about their idiocy instead of spending $7,000,000,000.oo annually on their ignorance?

No... let's give all the unwanted pregnancies a parade down every main street in the country, complete with floats and clowns and firemen and policemen... let's wave Old Glory for our unintended pregnant youths and show the world we care! Everybody is doing it and why shouldn't our youth be fucking like guppies? Let's keep that statistic in the U.S. where we can print it out in big block letters and march in the parade, waving the banner -
<center>WE HAVE MORE UNINTENDED PREGNANCIES THAN ANYONE IN THE WORLD!
LET'S HERE FOR OUR YOUTH!
THEY'RE SEXUAL BEINGS LIKE THE REST OF US... AND THE MOST UNINFORMED!
HOORAY FOR AMERICA! HOORAY FOR AMERICA!
</center>
Hell, we need more uneducated, uninformed youths to take over in 40 years, don't we? Please....

It baffles me, too, Cecil. They start educating kids in the US about safe sex very early.... before they reach puberty.... often in elementary school they learn about condoms.

Are all the incidents of unwanted pregnancies due to unprotected sex? Most likely not. But most of them are probably.

And yes, parents are responsible for teaching their children, too. Not just the schools. I started talking to both of my kids when they were very young.

Still, the point I was trying to make is that certainly ALL the girls who get pregnant without planning it are not promiscuous sluts. Most teens have ONE boyfriend.... not from promiscuous behavior.

It isn't fair or nice to condemn a young lady like Bristol Palin for being sexually active with her boyfriend. It's common and to call her a slut is ignorant. Did she have unprotected sex? I have no idea. Probably, but who knows? As we've discussed the pill is only 98% effective.

What she did was make a very difficult adult decision during a time of crisis and she should be respected for it, not condemned.

I don't think we should excuse irresponsible behavior by anyone, even teenagers. I don't know how "irresponsible" BP actually is, but I think the joke tellers assume she has been acting irresponsibly, and thus target her along those lines, and this may or may not be an "appropriate" form of humor.

I can't tell from Doreen's statements if she agrees that many teens do in fact engage in irresponsible sexual activity or if all sexual activity should be considered normal by definition-- that part is unclear to me.

But Doreen is pretty clear on the point that the slam jokes are not appropriate, no matter how one views the ethics of the question, and I can understand that.

Ironically, as the discussion veers toward questions of "reproductive responsibility," the question of willful ignorance also surfaces-- particularly in terms of Sarah Palin's stunted far-Right "Evangelical" Bible-thumping politics. Isn't it Sarah Palin and her ilk who are the ones who want to block access to birth control and reproductive education in our schools?

It's not just in the US, either, btw.

Teenage Pregnancy on the Rise in China
http://www.theepochtimes.com/news/4-4-8/20868.html

Teen pregnancy in the UK
http://www.prlog.org/10192551-new-data- ... -rise.html

Throughout the world
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_pregnancy
The highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world is in sub-Saharan Africa, where women tend to marry at an early age.[2] In Niger, for example, 87% of women surveyed were married and 53% had given birth to a child before the age of 18.
In the Indian subcontinent, early marriage sometimes means adolescent pregnancy, particularly in rural regions where the rate is much higher than it is in urbanized areas. The rate of early marriage and pregnancy has decreased sharply in Indonesia and Malaysia, although it remains relatively high.
The U.S. teenage pregnancy rate was at a high in the 1950s and has decreased since then, although there has been an increase in births out of wedlock.[13] The teenage pregnancy rate decreased significantly in the 1990s; this decline manifested across all racial groups, although teenagers of African-American and Hispanic descent retain a higher rate, in comparison to that of European-Americans and Asian-Americans. The Guttmacher Institute attributed about 25% of the decline to abstinence and 75% to the effective use of contraceptives
According to information available from the Guttmacher Institute, sex by age 20 is the normal age across the world, and countries with low levels of adolescent pregnancy accept sexual relationships among teenagers and provide comprehensive and balanced information about sexuality.

Unlike our country and the foolhardy abstinence program preached by Bristol Palin.

compare that with what you posted -

Completely different from the U.S. young women who feel they don't need to be married, but only need a parent to help raise their child.
In the Indian subcontinent, early marriage sometimes means adolescent pregnancy
Key word: married, unlike Bristol Palin and the example she is setting for girls her age.

Correct. It's about providing comprehensive and balanced information about sexuality. We need to teach the kids how to have responsible sex. NOT teach them that there's something WRONG with having sex because there isn't something wrong with having sex.

If you read the articles I posted, you'll see that statistics differ but it's obvious that people all over the world, not just in the United States are not only having sex as teenagers but they're also having children as teenagers.

Everywhere.

I'm not married.

I have two children and I'm not married.

So what?

Posted: June 29th, 2009, 6:20 pm

Not to get personal at all... but just think back. I'm sure you know some people who had children without getting married and who also had children at a very young age.

Sometimes people make the decision to go ahead and get married because the woman is pregnant and they think that getting married would be the best arrangement. But until the baby was on it's way, they really weren't even considering marriage.

Nothing wrong with that. These are personal individual choices.

They can choose to remain unmarried or choose to marry. It's up to them.

I sure hope not.

Hey Cecil, don't get me wrong... I'm not condoning it teens having sex. I'm only saying it's part of life. You had sex when you were a teenager, right? Of course you did.

Responsibility is key.

For the record, I'm trying to teach my daughter to hold off until she's .... well.... at least ..... 35 or so.
