i spent the afternoon
in raillery with a boogieman.
he lingered outside
my bathroom window
when i was in the shower.
as if peering eyes gave him power.

i dressed and went
to find him hiding
behind a tree.
he confessed
and tried to
pacify me.

i usurped his spying with wit.
i told him a joke about cops
and he split.
