It's been my experience that the National Weather Service can predict yesterday's weather with about 80% accuracy.

Some time back I made a long hike into the Quabbin Valley in search of the wreckage of an F-86 that crashed there sometime in the 1950s. NWS gave me a green light: "partly sunny, low-mid 70s". Great. Two miles out the sky darkened, & a light drizzle turned into a cold, steady downpour. Never found the crash site, but a ranger I met on the return trip told me I'd come close. She took pity on me & gave me a lift back to the trailhead.

Two days before my surgery, I laundered all my bedding and put them on the line to dry, based on NWS assurance of "mostly sunny, light NW breeze 5-10 mph". I had to race the rain getting all the sheets off the line, & still had to make a trip to the laundromat to finish the drying.

I guess the takeaway is that eyeballs out the window & an arthritic ankle are as reliable predictors of weather as the NWS.....

They make these predictions without taking into account local geography, Roy - fucks 'em up every time - around here the Plateau causes changes in passing weather systems - I think they should preface any local forecasts first with the warning "For residents of Tug Hill Plateau all bets are off"
