Why is it wherever people go, there's garbage? I stand nearby while the dog hunts for that perfect spot to pee, and there at my feet is a crumpled cigarette pack - Pyramid brand. Yesterday he found something under the snow that he ate before I could pull him off, and whatever it was gave him diarrhea during the night. I've tried recording night sounds, but all I seem to capture are passenger jets far overhead. The new normal. None for me, thanks.

While I sign in, an old man sits alone on the far side of the lobby, staring listlessly at the Christmas tree, a cane across his lap. The dog sees him, and strains at the leash to investigate. I set the pen down and assess the tableaux. We come here often to visit my mother, and while the staff and some of the residents adore the dog, others seem put off by his energy. Anyone who ignores his frantic bids for their attention likely wishes to left alone.
But he smiles at the dog and makes eye contact with him, so I let him approach. Wiggling ecstatically, he drags me across the lobby to nuzzle and lick the old gent's outstretched hand. The man says something I cannot hear, but it was addressed to the dog and not to me. I watch carefully for the first sign of dismay at this unrelenting tsunami of affection before pulling him back.
"Come on, Kane," I say. "Let's go see Gramma." And we head up the curving staircase to my mom's apartment. The old man does not watch us, but is still smiling, as if he has absorbed some of Kane's energy.

Day after shortest day of year - 7:30 a.m. been up since 3 a.m.- 23 degrees - snowing -
forecast- storm - fire started - went to bed so early last night fire must have gone out around midnight - chilly when I woke up, stove completely cold iron -
they can talk climate change all they want - truth is: wouldn't take much to frost this planet - I mean ice may be melting but it ain't gone away.

thx, mingo - I think I grok the intent of this form, but my tech-brain is smarter than my art-brain, and I wasn't 100% sure that I "got it". Stay warm, old man.... we got a few more days of rough weather ahead....

I paint when I'm in transition
lay down the the color and texture
of a morphing human, and that doesn't mean my painting will be dark
it usually means quite the opposite
today is my discussion group
a great bunch of thoughtful humans
half men half women, but that doesn't mean alien or inhuman
whole lottta of inspiration and clarity most days
one Saturday a month, two hours
coffee and pastries and topical food for thought
going to see Star Wars in 3D later on
I'm not a big fan but my friend Sharon is
if you can, go spend your money on The Shape of Water
Guillermo del Toro is a master
and the story percolates so many issues
brings them to a gentle boil
check it out

Re: Zuihitsu
my monkey brain is wonderfully made
why does it sometimes keep scribbling away from what I would rather be doing.
Baby sister watches Joyce Behar on TV.
she liked this bit.
"Then next man who wants to see me naked is going to have to put me in his will."
Funny lady.
I never want to die, just want to ride by bike forever across the endless Texas sky.

the last Jedi is a story of hope
and most definitely a story of resistance
I believe we will see this theme repeated
again and again in the coming year lest we forget
a gruesome history.....Hitler coined the lugenpresse
"the lying press"
fake news today is on the lips of all the foxes

Re: Zuihitsu
There's something unifying about a winter storm, something that engenders a kind of neighborhood solidarity even though we all act only on our own behalfs. (Behalves?) As I dig out my car (one plastic shovelful at a time), I can hear Lam Duan's snowblower purring, and wave to her as she and an arcing plume of snow briefly come into view before she disappears on her next pass down the drive. Elsewhere I can hear the rumbling crescendo of a snowplow-fitted pickup ramming into a growing mountain of snow, like the tectonic forces jamming India under the edge of the Himalayas. We all labor separately, but we're doing it together, and it binds us into a loose alliance, and I know if I should slip and fall and break something that Lam Duan or Steve or Kelly & Adam will be over in a heartbeat to finish the job for me, and I know that I'd do the same for any of them. The self-reliant never hesitate to help another self-reliant in need.
