My bike's name is Ghost of the Susquehanna officially, from the Kerouac book. I call her "Ghost" for short.

Rolling through the village yesterday I heard a Creedence Clearwater Revival song playing from someone's front porch -

"It came out of the sky
just a little south of Moline
Jody fell out his tractor
couldn't believe what he seen
he laid on the ground
shook fearing for his life
then he ran all the way to town
screaming it came out of the sky ! "

Liking the song, which I had not heard for some time I began circling the house to listen to it to the end. Older man on the porch from his chair watched me do this a couple of times then he stood up calling for his wife,
"Betty ! Betty ! Come quick ! the Indians are circling the house ! John Wayne is dead these many years and what we gonna do now,my sweet Betty Blue?"
He smiled, I laughed & kept circling. When the song was done he and I waved to each other & I shot off in the direction of Red Mill Road and out into the country beyond the village. The Ghost & I had just counted coup.

We rode on, midsummer grass high on both sides of the road and touched by wind. The porch man must have been a diehard Creedence fan because just before we rolled out of earshot I could hear the beginning quitar riff of "Green River" -

some things are just too right for words -

down to the village first thing this morning - light rain - on a milk run for some items - stopped at the landlord's on the way back, saw he was up and about - he always has a lot of ideas roaming his head - today and in the near future we're gonna move gravel and he'll be up to dump fill behind the longhouse here between the house and the cement pad in preparation for eventually pouring cement to fill the gap then we're gonna move more gravel & fix one of the tractors ( at last count he had more than a dozen of these machines ) and then ... we're gonna move more gravel -

the landlord was born on the 4th of July - i kid not - him and the Declaration of Independence have a birthday coming up - I wouldn't be surprised if he has us moving gravel on his birthday, just for shits & giggles -

tomorrow another

i almost just stitched
a coyote howl
across the night

Midsummer spirits out there tonight. Crickets, mists, and coyotes. On the move, all of it. Was going to go a midnight ride but something has stopped me.

Took a ride day before yesterday. Rolling over country road. The state route that passes the house, man, people are flying out there. Ain't my place to say I suppose but they can have it - I used to be one of them but time was ain't now. The woman here says to me, "It's the little things, Baby" - get no argument from me.

little girl in her window
sun behind a big tree
fence posts with no wire between them
pass on to horizons

My two wheels sing their rolling song as they pass under sky & over earth. The whirling spokes make a sound that's hard to describe. It's always there when you're in motion but you have to listen to tune into it because of the wind noise in your ears & passing traffic & whatnot. It's turbine like but not a roar - a whisper.

old chicken house
half buried in summer grass
two blackbirds pass over
moving off
moving on

There is a large rain puddle in my driveway left by last night's passing storms. It has changed shaped all day as it dries up. Right now it looks like a bird or an angel. Anyway, something with wings.

Grabbed the bike & popped down to the village for odds & ends - rain forecast, skies dark, clouds low - picked up the booty, strapped it to the rack, climbed the rise out of the village, reached for the Warp Speed Mr. Zulu! gear. Made it to the longhouse just as the rain began to fall, smile on my face ... a Pony Express rider reaching the station house under full gallop with arrow pierced mail pouches just ahead of a Cheyenne war party couldn't have smiled any different or any wider than I just did.

Thunder last night - cooing of a dove this morning - just like judih said in her last haiku, getting to the changes - midsummer now, passing even as i look upon it -

small white butterfly
crossing the lawn
up down up down

Out nightriding last night before the storm hit - out in a field saw a bonfire fueled by the dreams of the folks there - people standing & sitting around - bits of conversation coming to me as i passed by, the smell of beer, a whiff of reefer - these weren't kids - appeared to me older folks - in their 60's - old hippies maybe, believers in Star Trek & Twilight Zone, rock & roll & poetry & the prediction of futures by the stars - I've learned things take on a mystical tint in this neck of the woods - not exactly In Watermelon Sugar but maybe like the background color of a painting - I pedaled on taking hint of wind coming out of the northwest & the sound of thunder not so far off - time to head for the longhouse if I wanted to stay dry

flowers in the ditches
in the dark
moon's edge misted with cloud

Night ride last night. High clouds. Today overcast. Had the backroads to myself. I the only one out there. Hands on handlebars steering a dream. My bike lights going blink blink blink.

every name
can be imaged
as a single tree at the end
of the path along the cliff
bent back by ceaseless winds

I wake
every morning
into a world reality ocean
of words -
and some far off guy
is singing some far off song
rain all around -
best thing right now is
to explore

... if I were to write my name in the gravel of the driveway now the marks would quickly fill with rainwater, soften, & wash away - a name is important of course but not to the rain. It's a relative, not an absolute thing. I do not wish to beat down. I do not wish to uplift. I wish only to breathe and maybe move around a little. Things are soaking wet up here on the slopes of the Hill & everything is crowded with grey. I can see there will be no riding today unless I morph into a frog.
