Wireman - your question made me think - i never saw one while there but got out on the 'net just now - couldn't find any mention of historical presence of burros in Japan - no burro fallout anywhere either in or out of a sombrero -

surrealist notion - brush & ink painting of Basho wearing a sombrero & leading a burro along a narrow road to the interior during a snowfall

damn, yours is the oddest question to field itself in my vicinity today ...

an odd thought indeed....was recently watching this crazy mexican movie with toshiro mifune as a drunken mexican peasant on youtube that is rather amazing....i know there were donkeys in the middle east, i wonderhow far they went towards the far east...

finally saw some
examples today - amazing how much space he managed to hold together with three or four
thin brushstrokes -

... and what the hell gives with these old guys getting hot young zen nuns wanting to hang around? I ain't getting that kind of action and i'm certainly as crazy as any of them -
