Cut Ups--footnote

Post by Lightning Rod » August 20th, 2008, 6:37 pm

Here is a synopsis of the cut up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut-up_technique

It was explored earlier, mostly in graphic art. But Bryon Gysin introduced W.S. Burroughs to it and he applied it to literature more fully.
Gysin introduced writer William S. Burroughs to the technique at the Beat Hotel. The pair later applied the technique to printed media and audio recordings in an effort to decode the material's implicit content, hypothesizing that such a technique could be used to discover the true meaning of a given text. Burroughs also suggested cut-ups may be effective as a form of divination saying, "When you cut into the present the future leaks out."[1] Burroughs also further developed the "fold-in" technique.
I love cut ups. I use them often.
it's like pick-up sticks
you have to decipher order from randomness

I have found that rather than starting from other people's material, like newspaper articles etc, it is more productive to start with your own material and then cut that up. It's more authentic.

I'm hoping that this will be a productive artlog.

artlog hoping
productive hoping
this will be
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

The Poet's Eye

I like that idea,
everytime I make one I get a sense of the writers underlying feelings for the subject.
