Galloping through Madrugada

GALLOPING THROUGH MADRUGADA
By Steve Plonk

How can this be that I am still awake?
Night’s so dreary & time is crawling/
My sight is growing too dim & my lids
Burn from staying awake...

The sunrise seems like a long journey
Through this dark night/
O plains of my sorrows &
I am a horse which gallops across them...

The arrows of light have yet to
Pierce the tops of the cliffs—
I feel my hooves pounding beneath me...

Yet, I must have dozed
For now I glimpse an arrow or two of light
In spite of my trying to stay up
To see the new Easter Day,
With all my might through madrugada/
Hooray for the Dawn! The Lord is risen!

Circa Spring 1978. Revised Oct. 2010.

california to new york in three days
fighting sleep since I crossed through the Delaware Water Gap
Barely conscious
then there it is
The New York City Skyline in the early morning light
And my weariness fell away

Not a poet
but just wanted to try and relate to your poem

Still Truckin', Great driving marathon you had there! California to New York, 3 days! Yes, I was probably as tired as that... The poem tries to capture the night of that bygone time back in 1978. The world has turned quite a few times since then...

Thanks, Still Trucking! I think you expressed it quite well. A journey
seems darkest before the dawn or the lights of the city. Seems like a
great light was made when the Lord resurrected...which the dawn also kind of
symbolized. Hope was the "arrows of light".

Hope is seeing the lights of the city after a long slog through mountain passes, etc. I've been through the Delaware Gap. (Penn. & New Jersey?){Also, Kansas seemed like a long tedious ride to me, but we didn't stop until we got to Lawrence.}

except in few occassions, I´m only semi-conscious at madrugada thanks to the alarm clock...! Naturally, I´m more aware and able to enjoy sunsets...! That´s why maybe I liked your poem, gracias!!! :)
