Well, knip:

I was torn between composing my long list or just writing Bill Evans and Beethoven and leaving it at that.

Z, I thought Grisman's playing in that doc was great
Garcia was just backing him up like a good journeyman musician would do.

yes, the show is a pean to the friendship of the two men. You can tell that Grisman is a bit starstruck.

I love the mandola just as I love the alto flute. Just has more balls.

Grisman's playing is almost always great.

On my friend's record it was lackluster. You could tell he wasn't interested.

Grisman is a bit thorny around the edges-- comes from a lifetime of privilege, I think. Living in Marin County, exclusively surrounded by very smart people, movers and shakers in the acoustic music world-- other great players.

But as I affirmed several times, he's a great musician.

I don't know him personally, so who am I to talk? I'm a mandolin maggot-- he's a mesoderm . . .

( it's hell on wooden instruments, though)

Link Wray and Dick Dale are the reasons I learned to play the guitar

Marc Ribot, with his maniacal guitar leads

John "Drumbo" French, dare I say it the most amazing drummer ever in the history of everything

Nick Drake, man the pictures he painted with that guitar

Bill Monroe, Maybell Carter, Roy Acuff; it is amazing how complex 3 chords can be

Captain Beefheart, purely visceral, whimsical, terrifying, charming

Ricky Wilson (original guitarist of the B-52's), honing camp into a fine art

Harry Partch, for the chilling, the strange, the compelling, and the total annihilation

Yeah, dewd--this thread sounds like some preliminary work for a group effort: The Atascadero Requiem? The Vacaville Concerto in Z Minor......

The Bellevue Nocturnes, Opus 834749: Conductor-- Rot, Lightnin'

Debussy's experiments anticipated jazz, Stravinsky, and atonality
